'Dangerous Heat Wave' Striking ABD: Feels-Like Temperature to Reach 46 Degrees

This extreme weather event coincides with the week of the 4 Temmuz Independence Day celebrations and is expected to adversely affect millions of people. Authorities are warning all citizens, especially low-income groups, the elderly, and children, against severe health risks such as heatstroke. In official warnings issued by the Ulusal Meteoroloji Servisi (NWS), it is emphasized that temperatures will remain high not only during the day but also at night. This situation prevents the body from recovering and cooling down overnight, significantly increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.

According to statements from the Ulusal Meteoroloji Servisi, this severe heat wave will impact a vast geography covering the center and east of the country. In densely populated areas such as Teksas, Florida, New York, Illinois, and the capital Washington D.C., the heat risk level will range from 'high' to 'extreme'. While actual temperatures are expected to exceed 37 degrees Celsius in a large part of the country, high humidity levels will dangerously push the feels-like temperature to 46 degrees. The combination of heat and high humidity will initially affect the Güney Ovaları and Orta Mississippi Vadisi before rapidly shifting to the Orta Atlantik region. This meteorological outlook indicates that previous years' temperature records for these dates could easily be broken.

On the other hand, extreme heat and ongoing drought have triggered devastating wildfires in the western part of the country. The governors of Colorado and Utah have officially declared a state of emergency due to uncontrolled fires and extreme weather conditions in their regions. A fire that broke out on the Colorado and Utah border had tragic consequences for firefighters operating in the area. According to the latest information from authorities, three firefighters lost their lives while battling the blaze, and two others were severely injured. These deaths bitterly demonstrated that the climate crisis and heat waves in the country are directly linked not only to temperature values but also to loss of life.

Data shared by the government's Ulusal Yangın Merkezi (NIFC) reveals the scale of the battle across the country. Currently, 27 large-scale fires are burning in at least nine different states, including Alaska, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Kuzey Carolina, Florida, Idaho, and Wyoming. These uncontrolled fires have turned a total of 25 thousand 786 acres (approximately 10 thousand 435 hectares) of forested areas and settlements into ashes. Firefighting crews are facing significant difficulties in tackling these blazes, which continue to grow due to extreme heat and wind. Authorities are urging the public to remain cautious, warning that similar or even more severe fires could be seen throughout the rest of the year.

This meteorological crisis experienced across ABD once again proves the dimensions of global climate change and its devastation on daily life. Experts state that heat waves are no longer just a seasonal anomaly but have become a standard and more dangerous part of the summer months. Warnings are being issued that, especially in regions with inadequate infrastructure to combat heat, there could be overcrowding in intensive care units and morgues due to extreme temperatures, just as in the past. Citizens complying with basic precautions, such as consuming plenty of water, avoiding going outside during midday hours, and staying in air-conditioned environments, stands out as a critical necessity to overcome this challenging period.
