ABD's new customs tariffs will affect 18 percent of Brazil's exports

Brazil's Minister of Development, Industry, and Trade, Márcio Elias Rosa, announced that the new customs tariffs to be implemented by US President Donald Trump's administration will hit 18 percent of Brazil's exports to the ABD. According to 2024 data, this rate corresponds to a volume of 7,4 billion dollars in trade between the two countries. The Minister stated that the new tariffs will come into effect on 22 Temmuz.

If the calculation is made based on 2025 data, the share of the affected sectors in exports drops to 15 percent (5,8 billion dollars). However, it is noted that 57 percent of the products Brazil sells to the ABD remain outside the new tariff list. Meanwhile, 24 percent of the products could be subject to additional taxes of up to 50 percent; the steel, aluminum, and automotive sectors will be among those paying the highest taxes.

The US government decided to impose a new 25 percent tariff on Brazilian products as a result of an investigation conducted by the Office of the Trade Representative. The Brazilian government argues that these additional taxes have no economic justification and are based on political motivations. While the Lula administration described the decision as a "sad turning point" in bilateral relations, it was reported that preparations have begun for support programs for the affected sectors.
