Ayhan Barut's Outcry Over Forest Fires: Government Watches as Our Lungs Burn!

Ayhan Barut, a member of the main opposition CHP, argued that the government has not been effectively combating the recurring forest fire disasters. Barut criticized the authorities for remaining idle while the entire ecosystem turns to ashes and called for an immediate implementation of an emergency action plan. Noting that fires have been erupting in various parts of the country even at the beginning of summer, Barut emphasized that the crisis is much deeper than commonly perceived. He stressed that forest fires cannot be evaluated merely as a loss of trees, pointing out that these disasters cause the death of thousands of living beings, destruction of natural habitats, and irreparable damage to biodiversity. Barut reminded that the depletion of oxygen sources and the dramatic decline in air quality further deepen the climate crisis, and that ensuring forest security means safeguarding soil, water resources, agriculture, and the overall future.

Despite experiencing the same painful events every year, Ayhan Barut argued that the fire season is not entered with adequate preparation, detailing the authorities' shortcomings. He stated that the removal of forest villagers and workers from the process and their villages has greatly harmed the fight against fires. Barut noted that the ineffective use of the air fleet and the lack of seriousness in personnel and equipment planning have practically fueled the current crisis. Claiming that the government has not taken sufficient initiative against fires, Barut condemned the administration for failing to prepare an emergency action plan and invited them to take concrete steps immediately. He also emphasized that the lack of coordination in firefighting is a major problem, and that cooperation between local governments, civil society, and the public needs to be increased.

Stating that permanent solutions based on scientific data have become an unavoidable necessity, Adana Deputy Ayhan Barut shared his prescription for salvation with the public. Barut stressed the need for a strong air fleet consisting of aircraft and helicopters capable of operating 24/7, fully prepared before the fire season begins. He demanded that the forestry organization be urgently reinforced in terms of personnel, logistics, and technical equipment. The CHP deputy reminded that early warning and continuous monitoring systems in all high-risk areas must be expanded as soon as possible. He expressed the need to establish an unshakable coordination network among local governments, local people, non-governmental organizations, volunteer teams, and relevant public institutions. Barut concluded that with increased social awareness and uncompromising tightening of inspections, there is not a single second to lose in protecting our nature.

Barut also highlighted the economic and social dimensions of forest fires, noting that the damage to agricultural lands, settlements, and tourism areas amounts to billions of liras. He emphasized the serious health impacts of air pollution caused by fires. Barut stated that the government should be more proactive in fighting fires and that measures to prevent forest fires should be planned with a long-term strategy. He added that climate change increases fire risk, necessitating the development of adaptation policies.

Finally, Barut noted that all segments of society have a role in combating forest fires. He said citizens should be sensitive to fire risk and assist authorities. He also stressed the importance of accurate and timely reporting of fire news by the media. Barut emphasized that protecting forests is not only today's responsibility but also that of future generations, calling on everyone to be vigilant. Reiterating the need for an emergency action plan to be implemented as soon as possible to prevent fires and mitigate their effects, Barut invited the government to take action.
