Rock Calendar Collapses in Malta: Tourist Dies, Two Injured

In a tragic accident that occurred on Saturday evening off the coast of Comino, an island belonging to Malta, a natural rock arch collapsed onto a jet ski passing underneath it. As a result of this horrific incident, a tourist lost their life, while two other individuals sustained various injuries. Following the incident, health and rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the area. Authorities assessed the gravity of the situation and launched a large-scale search and rescue operation in the region. According to initial findings, all three individuals involved in the accident were tourists visiting the island.

According to a statement from the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM), the Coordination Centre began receiving emergency calls regarding the rockfall incident in the area during the morning hours. Upon this, emergency teams and marine rescue boats were immediately dispatched to the scene. A woman at the scene, who required urgent medical attention, was evacuated to Mgarr Harbour aboard an AFM rescue vessel. The woman was subsequently handed over to Gozo General Hospital personnel for medical treatment. Another casualty, suffering from minor injuries, was transported to the same harbour by a private boat and underwent necessary health checks there.

Following the evacuation of the injured, a comprehensive search effort was launched to find a third missing person. Divers and soldiers from the 3rd Regiment, affiliated with the AFM Gozo Command, conducted a detailed underwater search in the area. As a result of the teams' intensive efforts, the missing individual was found trapped underwater. Unfortunately, no signs of life were detected in the individual. Following this discovery, authorities officially initiated prospective investigation processes, as the incident turned into a medico-legal case.

Observations made at the scene and statements from eyewitnesss provided significant clues as to how the tragedy unfolded. According to eyewitness accounts, the rock arch collapsed in the evening, at approximately 19.00 near the Santa Marija Battery. A jet ski passing right underneath the arch at the time of the incident was trapped under the massive pieces of suddenly falling rock. The Civil Protection Department also contributed to the search efforts by dispatching a rescue vessel and expert personnel to the scene to manage the crisis. All these teams meticulously carried out the operation under challenging sea conditions to secure the area.

In recent statements made by authorities, it was confirmed that the operations to fully recover the body of the deceased tourist continued throughout Saturday night. Furthermore, a magisterial inquiry has been opened to investigate the detailed circumstances and any potential negligence surrounding this fatal accident. Comino stands out as an extremely popular destination for both locals and foreign tourists during the summer months with its unique natural beauty and bays. However, this tragic incident has painfully demonstrated how dangerous interacting with nature can be against the risks of erosion and collapse that develop over time in natural rock formations. Tourism officials and security forces announced that efforts will be made to reassess safety measures in the region to prevent similar accidents from occurring.
