2 people lost their lives in the explosion in Çorlu, cause likely natural gas

In a tragic incident that took place in the Çorlu district of Tekirdağ, an explosion occurred on the top floor of a 6-story apartment building. The explosion, which occurred on the top floor of the building located in Hıdırağa Mahallesi Borsa Meydanı, caused great panic and sensitivity in the region. Upon the report of the incident, a large number of health teams, fire brigades, police forces, and AFAD teams were dispatched to the region for immediate intervention. The teams arriving at the scene initiated their work by taking security measures, and material damage was observed in the building due to the severity of the explosion. It was shared that, unfortunately, there were loss of life and injuries in this disaster; according to initial determinations, 2 of our citizens lost their lives and 2 of our citizens were injured.

Initial assessments regarding the cause of the explosion point to the high possibility that the incident was caused by natural gas. It was stated that the infrastructure of the relevant building by GAZDAŞ Trakya, which provides gas services in the region, was being examined and that the possibility of a leak explosion caused by natural gas was being focused on. It was recorded that serious damage occurred in the interior of the apartment and the exterior facade of the building due to the impact of the explosion, and extensive security measures were taken due to the risk of damage to surrounding buildings. After the incident was brought under control, the building was completely evacuated to determine whether the structural integrity was maintained and to prevent a similar risk. Çorlu District Governor Niyazi Erten emphasized in his statement that the explosion was likely caused by natural gas and that the situation is currently under control.

Erten shared that one citizen lost their life at the scene, and another citizen passed away despite all interventions performed at the hospital. Stating the situation regarding the injured as well, District Governor Erten expressed that a total of 2 injured were brought to Çorlu State Hospital, one was discharged after the completion of their treatment, and the other injured was kept under observation in the hospital as a precaution. These statements served as an official status determination regarding the health consequences of the incident.

Following this tragic incident, necessary precautions were quickly taken regarding the safety of the building and the sheltering needs of the residents. According to the information provided by District Governor Erten, the apartment building where the explosion occurred was completely emptied against possible risks, and the safety of the residents was ensured. It was stated that the temporary sheltering needs of the evacuated citizens were met by the relevant authorities and that the necessary sensitivity was shown to prevent any grievance. It was announced that accommodation places were secured for the residents to continue their lives and that the processes regarding the issue were being closely monitored. It was observed that steps were taken to ensure peace and security in the region regarding the administrative dimension of the incident.

It was reported that technical work to determine the exact cause of the explosion continues and the definite result will be determined after the examinations. Experts are conducting detailed analyses in the fire and explosion area to determine whether there was a gas leak or a technical malfunction. Authorities stated that although the natural gas possibility is focused on during the preliminary examinations, the definite result will become clear with the announcement of the technical report and will be shared with the public. During this period, it was learned that security measures in the region continue and the evacuation process will continue until a new decision is made regarding the use of the building.
