DOA System is expanding: Businesses will be included by the end of October

The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change announced that the Deposit Return System for Packaging (DOA) has achieved significant success across Turkey. It was stated that following the implementation of the system, it received intense interest from citizens and significant increases in recycling rates were achieved. According to ministry data, 65 percent of beverages with the DOA logo currently on the market have been consumed. This rate reveals both that consumers' adaptation to the system has occurred rapidly and how much environmental awareness has strengthened in society. It is aimed to recycle the packaging waste collected within the scope of the system and bring it into the economy.

In a written statement made by the Ministry regarding the issue, it was emphasized that the system will move to the next stage and its scope will be expanded. Accordingly, all businesses where 65 percent of beverages with the DOA logo have been consumed will have to be integrated into the system. The deadline granted to the relevant businesses has been set for the end of October this year. Authorities stated that they expect all necessary infrastructure and compliance processes to be completed by this specified date. This step is expected to make the recycling network much more comprehensive.

This project, launched as part of the Zero Waste Movement, holds a highly strategic position in terms of Turkey's environmental policies. The operational process of the implementation is meticulously carried out by the Turkish Environmental Agency (TÜÇA), a subsidiary of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. The agency's core duties include supervising the operation of the system, coordinating producer and seller companies, and contributing to public awareness. Thanks to TÜÇA's proactive management, it is aimed to prevent packaging waste from mixing into nature. The institution is also continuously developing new technological infrastructures and collection points for the system to work more efficiently.

Currently, the high consumption rates achieved from the system demonstrate that citizens are highly willing to get back the deposit fees they paid. In particular, the process of returning beverages purchased from markets has made recycling habits a standard part of daily life. With the transition of businesses into the system by the end of October, a significant increase in the number of return points and service varieties is anticipated. This situation will offer an easier return process for consumers and bring simultaneous success nationwide in waste management. The compliance of businesses with these regulations will also pave the way for establishing a sustainable economic cycle across the country.

Increasing cooperation between businesses and consumers is of great importance in order to sustain the success of the DOA System and reach the targeted 100 percent collection rates. The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change clearly states that after the end-of-October deadline granted to businesses, inspections will be tightened and remaining outside the system will not be allowed. It is discussed that in the upcoming period, the scope of the system could be expanded to include other types of packaging besides bottles and cans. This visionary step by Turkey makes a significant contribution to both the protection of the national ecological balance and global climate change mitigation goals.
