Trial begins in Hong Kong model Abby Choi murder case

The trial concerning the killing and dismemberment of well-known Hong Kong model Abby Choi has begun with the prosecution of three defendants. The defendants are Choi's ex-husband Alex Kwong, his father Kwong Kau, and his brother Anthony Kwong. All face charges of murder and preventing the lawful burial of a body, offenses that carry a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

The trial reveals the murder was motivated by financial dispute; a planned killing ensued following a family disagreement when Choi decided to sell a property valued at 70 million Hong Kong Dollars (approximately 7.7 million Euros / 8.9 million US Dollars). On February 21, 2023, Choi was intercepted by her former brother-in-law while picking up her daughter from school, killed in a pre-prepared house, and her body dismembered and hidden in a freezer or pots.

Alex Kwong was arrested four days after the incident while attempting to flee Hong Kong by speedboat, carrying large amounts of cash, jewelry, and luxury watches. Mother Jenny Li awaits a separate trial on charges of perverting the course of justice and assisting an offender. The main trial is expected to last approximately 45 sessions, and additional courtrooms have been opened due to intense public interest.
