Government Prepares to Reshape Election System

The People's Alliance is preparing to make comprehensive changes to the election system and the Law on Political Parties. New obstacles to the opposition's joint list formula are on the agenda. In the government camp, options being discussed include having different parties nominate candidates from a single party's list and making it more difficult for opposition parties to participate in elections through joint candidate lists without merging, forming an umbrella party, or establishing an official alliance.

Possible changes to the election legislation may not be limited to the alliance system. Conditions for small parties may be tightened. The strengthening of organizational requirements that political parties must fulfill to participate in elections and the implementation of intra-party primaries are also among the topics being discussed.

However, it is not yet clear which articles the potential changes will cover and when they will be brought to the parliamentary agenda.
