Rose, cherry and apple producers in Isparta face hardship

CHP Isparta Deputy Yalım Halıcı has drawn attention to the economic difficulties faced by rose, cherry and apple producers in Isparta. In his statement, Halıcı emphasized that producers are suffering greatly due to rising costs and low prices. He noted that rose producers, in particular, are experiencing significant losses in the rose cultivation that is a symbol of Isparta. He stated that cherry and apple producers are also struggling with similar problems, being forced to sell their products below cost. Halıcı stressed that this negative situation in the agricultural sector adversely affects both producers and agricultural workers.

Halıcı pointed out that agricultural workers' wages are insufficient and their working conditions need improvement. He stated that seasonal agricultural workers in Isparta are employed with low wages, lack social security, and have poor accommodation conditions. This leads to worker dissatisfaction and threatens the sustainability of agricultural production, he said. Halıcı emphasized the need for urgent measures to protect workers' rights and improve wages.

Regarding producer costs, Halıcı noted that increases in input prices such as fertilizers, pesticides, diesel and electricity have put producers in a difficult position. He stated that government agricultural supports are insufficient and more incentives are needed for producers to survive. He also highlighted the instability of product prices and that producers cannot get the return for their labor. Halıcı called for a review of agricultural policies and regulations in favor of producers.

Halıcı expressed that Isparta has high agricultural potential but this potential cannot be utilized under current conditions. Reminding that Isparta is an important production center for products like roses, cherries and apples, Halıcı said investments should be made to add value to these products. He stated that government support is essential for developing agriculture-based industry and increasing exports. Otherwise, he warned that producers might give up production.

Finally, Halıcı emphasized that all stakeholders need to come together to solve the problems. He said the Ministry of Agriculture, local governments, producer unions and non-governmental organizations should cooperate to produce permanent solutions. Halıcı called for urgent steps to be taken for the agricultural future of Isparta and stated that he would bring the issue to the agenda of the Turkish Grand National Assembly.
