Two Young People Lost Their Lives While Entering İznik Lake to Cool Off

In a tragic incident that occurred in the morning hours at the Sölözaltı location in the İznik district of Bursa, two young people lost their lives. According to the information obtained, Bünyamin Kadı (19) and İsmail İmamoğlu (21), who entered the lake to cool off, disappeared from sight after a while. Upon their two friends not emerging from the water and not wearing diving suits, other friends on the shore immediately reported the situation to the authorities. Following this report, teams from the İznik Asayiş Boat Command were dispatched to the region very quickly. Considering the severity and urgency of the incident, underwater police teams affiliated with the Mudanya Sea Port Department were also sent to the region to participate in the search efforts.

Immediately after the report was received, a comprehensive search and rescue operation was launched on İznik Lake. The aforementioned teams made intense efforts to find the missing youths by conducting both surface and underwater scans in the lake. As a result of the meticulous search work, the bodies of the young people were found underwater approximately 30 meters away from the shore. Unfortunately, the search efforts did not turn into a rescue operation, and the lifeless bodies of the youths were reached. This situation plunged their friends and families on the shore into deep grief. After the examinations by the prosecutor and forensic medicine team called to the scene, the bodies were taken to the hospital morgue for identification procedures.

İznik Lake is a popular tourist and relaxation area frequently visited by those overwhelmed by the hot weather during the summer months. Locals of the region and visitors from surrounding provinces prefer to enter the lake to cool off and spend time. However, situations where safety measures are not taken while entering the water or the structure of the water is unknown can unfortunately lead to tragic results. This sad incident at the Sölözaltı location brought the potential risks associated with swimming in the lake back to the agenda. Such incidents occurring in areas that may suddenly deepen despite appearing shallow or have a different ground structure serve as a major warning for everyone.

Security authorities managed to locate the missing youths in a short time thanks to the extraordinary efforts of the underwater teams. The search and scanning activities were sustained with technical equipment and the professional work of the divers. The fact that they were found about 30 meters from the shore indicates that the young people had ventured into the interior of the lake. Initial information obtained suggests that no criminal element or signs of external intervention were found during the examinations at the scene. However, the exact cause of death and details of the incident will become clear after the autopsy results are announced. The bodies were sent to the forensic medicine unit for autopsy and identification procedures.

This tragic incident has once again demonstrated the vital importance of adhering to safety rules during swimming and water activities, which increase in the summer months. Particularly, people who do not know how to swim or have low swimming ability should not venture into depths where they cannot ensure safety without a lifeguard. While the pain of the families and loved ones is indescribably deep, this incident caused great sadness and regret among the local residents as well. It was reported that in order to prevent such unfortunate incidents in İznik Lake, security warnings were reiterated by the relevant authorities, and citizens were asked to be more careful. The bodies of the young people are being kept at the morgue, where preparations are being made to hand them over to their families after the legal procedures are completed.
