Japan and Spain Held Tourism Cooperation Discussions in Gifu

Japan and Spain came together for an important meeting in the city of Gifu with the aim of strengthening bilateral tourism relations and increasing mutual tourism flow between the two countries. Senior tourism officials from both countries attended the Second Japan-Spain Joint Cooperation Committee meeting held at the Nagara International Congress Center on June 25. This event demonstrated the commitment of both countries to deepening their cultural and economic ties. During the meeting, the potential impacts of tourist attraction strategies on the daily lives of local people were discussed in detail. The parties aimed to expand their areas of cooperation by focusing on common goals to create a sustainable and balanced tourism model.

At the meeting, Japan was represented by prominent figures such as Takefumi Nakano, President of the International Tourism Department of the Japan Tourism Agency; Makiyu Deguchi, Director of the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO); and Kuniharu Ebina, President of the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA). The Spanish side was represented by significant bureaucrats such as Miguel Sanz, General Manager of the Spanish Tourism Promotion Institute; Ines Crespo, Advisor to the Spanish Ministry of Tourism; and Enrique Ruiz, Tourism Counselor of the Spanish Embassy. The two sides informed each other by making comprehensive presentations about their countries' current tourism policies. This high-level participation clearly demonstrated that both states view the tourism sector as a strategic priority. The officials agreed that mutual sharing of experiences would form a critical foundation for future projects.

One of the main agenda items of the discussions was the art of managing the increasing number of foreign tourists without compromising the quality of life of the local people. In particular, how to overcome issues such as overcrowding and infrastructure pressure faced by world-famous tourist destinations was discussed in detail. Representatives of both countries emphasized the importance of regional distribution strategies to prevent tourists from concentrating only in capitals and popular cities. Issues such as urban planning, infrastructure development, and social awareness studies were brought to the table to ensure a healthy harmony between tourists and the local community. In this context, the idea stood out that tourism should be adopted not only as an economic source of income but also as a lifestyle that does not threaten social welfare.

The effective use of technology in the transition to sustainable tourism models also had a special place at the meeting. Businesses and non-governmental organizations in the tourism sector shared innovative digital strategies and smart city applications developed to attract tourists to local regions with the participants. It was discussed how data analytics and artificial intelligence-supported systems could be used to predict the movements of tourists in advance, thereby alleviating the burden on cities. Additionally, environmental issues such as the promotion of green tourism practices that reduce carbon footprint and the protection of natural habitats were important parts of the discussion. The two countries exchanged views on taking innovative steps aimed at enriching the tourist experience and preserving ecological balance thanks to this technological transformation.

In addition to the official discussions, the technical tour and field inspections conducted in Gifu province for the Spanish delegation were among the most striking practical parts of the event. In this context, Spanish officials had the opportunity to get closely acquainted with Gifu's unique history, natural beauty, and rich cultural heritage. During the inspections, concrete examples were examined regarding how regional tourism could be revitalized and how local handicrafts and gastronomic elements could be integrated into package tours. The delegations expressed that this region, offering a unique understanding of hospitality, could become a highly attractive destination for Spanish tourists. Following the meeting, the two countries presented a joint statement, declaring that they would further advance this fruitful cooperation in tourism through future joint projects and mutual promotion campaigns.
