Cambodia's Domestic Tourism on the Rise: Cure for Declining Foreign Visitors Found in the Domestic Market

Despite the ongoing global security and economic uncertainties in recent months, domestic tourism trips by Cambodian citizens are showing a highly resilient outlook. Rather than declining, trips across the country have gained significant growth momentum. Recent data released by the Ministry of Tourism confirms that this growth is not just a temporary trend, but the result of encouraging policies. Authorities believe that the local population's increasing interest in exploring regions within their own country plays a vital role for the sector. This positive picture is also of great importance as it carries the nature of a strong antidote that can compensate for potential drops in international visitors.

According to statistics shared by the Ministry of Tourism, in the first five-month period of 2026 (Ocak-Mayıs), approximately 20,3 million Cambodian citizens traveled to various regions across the country. This figure represents a remarkable increase of %54,2 compared to the same period of the previous year. Thus, domestic tourism continues to stand out as one of the most important dynamics contributing to the country's economy. Ministry officials emphasize that this extraordinary growth is not coincidental and is a direct result of various strategic moves. Such high demand in the domestic market also directly and positively impacts many different sectors, such as accommodation and transportation.

This strong growth is attributed to six key mechanisms implemented by the Ministry of Tourism to revitalize the tourism sector. Additionally, the ministry launched various and effective new tourism campaigns to support these strategic steps. Among these campaigns, the "Visit Cambodia in the Green Season" and "Solidarity Tourism Season" initiatives, which specifically encourage visiting Cambodia in the green season, received great interest. Officials specifically add that the country's enjoyment of an environment of peace and social stability creates a favorable ground for the success of these projects. When these positive conditions combine, organizing various tourism and entertainment events across the country has also become extremely easy and free of risks.

In the official statement made by the Ministry, it was stated that the numerous entertainment events held in the country are a direct driving force behind this growth. Furthermore, the development of new tourism products and facilities has largely increased the local population's curiosity and desire to explore their own country. In this context, the new routes offered to tourists have noticeably enriched travel diversity by supporting an alternative holiday concept. The Ministry of Tourism reports that these new opportunities encourage Cambodians to travel more and closely discover the country's countless attractions. People now find the time they spend at domestic destinations much more fulfilling in terms of both entertainment and cultural discovery.

On the other hand, in stark contrast to this immense increase in domestic tourism, there has been a significant decline in the number of Cambodian citizens traveling abroad. In the Ocak-Mayıs period of 2026, the number of Cambodian nationals traveling abroad fell to 449.066, marking a decrease of %39 compared to the same period of the previous year. This situation is considered an important piece of data showing that citizens have largely started to keep their spending within the domestic economy. When past data is examined, it is seen that domestic tourist trips across Cambodia in 2025 reached 25,16 million with an %11,7 increase compared to 2024, and that a steady upward trend exists. It was also recorded that by the end of 2025, the travel infrastructure in the country continued to grow strongly with 95.588 accommodation rooms, 2.301 restaurants, 57 tourism facilities, and 129 community-based tourism centers.
