Kazakistan and South Korea Establish Rare Metals Research Center in Almatı

Kazakistan and South Korea have agreed to establish a joint research and technology center in Almatı to support the development of Kazakistan's rare metals and critical minerals industry. The facility, named the 'Kazakhstan-Korea Rare and Rare Earth Metals Center,' will operate under Satbayev Üniversitesi. The project involves significant collaboration and partnership from the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology and the Korea National Institute of Rare Metals. This step is closely related to the strategic goals of both countries regarding critical minerals and high-tech manufacturing. It is considered a highly critical investment in terms of regional development and technological independence.

Representatives of the three institutions discussed the implementation stages and methods of the project in detail during a meeting held on 9 Temmuz. The meeting also addressed strategies for purchasing the modern laboratory equipment needed for the center. The parties reached significant agreements on how to ensure long-term scientific and technological cooperation. The planning of joint research projects and the future vision of international collaborations were among the main agenda items of the meeting. Such high-level consultations indicate that the project will go beyond being just a physical center and transform into a comprehensive tool for technology diplomacy.

This new center to be established will train international standard experts for Kazakistan's growing rare metals industry. Additionally, it will provide a well-equipped platform for local researchers to easily access modern analytical and processing equipment. According to university officials, this facility holds great potential for developing strategic raw material processing technologies, expanding scientific research, and training world-class scientists. Meiram Begentayev, Rector of Satbayev Üniversitesi, emphasized that this joint scientific potential will significantly increase the country's technological capacity. The goal is to create a unique opportunity for domestic and foreign researchers to produce joint projects.

This research center will serve as Kazakistan's first full-cycle scientific and technological platform in the areas of developing, testing, and commercializing environmentally friendly technologies. Developing sustainable methods for the production of high-purity and ultra-high-purity rare earth metals will be among the priority topics at the facility. Furthermore, pilot applications of new technologies for processing mineral and industrial raw materials will be implemented here. Conducting basic and applied research in parallel will allow scientific discoveries to be rapidly transformed into industrial products. This innovative approach will support Kazakistan's transition from being just a raw material supplier to a country with high-tech product processing capabilities.

This initiative forms an integral part of Kazakistan's strategy to become a prominent and major supplier in the global critical minerals market. While demand for these metals from electric vehicle manufacturers and renewable energy companies increases day by day, the semiconductor and defense industries are also constantly increasing their need for rare metals. Kazakistan possesses a significant strategic advantage of having over 9,500 mineral deposits, including rare metals. The country holds the potential to supply a significant portion of the materials listed on the critical raw materials lists of the Amerika Birleşik Devletleri and Avrupa Birliği. Thanks to these collaborations, Kazakistan is becoming a geopolitical player of increasing importance for the security and diversification of global supply chains.
