Operation on 11 million lira fraud at Kuşadası Drivers' Cooperative: 3 detentions

A comprehensive operation was carried out against the Şoför Esnaf Kefalet Kredi Kooperativi located in the Kuşadası district of Aydın due to allegations of financial crimes. Within the scope of the investigation conducted by the Kuşadası Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, gendarmerie and police teams raided the cooperative's headquarters to conduct examinations. In the operation, Cooperative Chairman Hüsnü Öten, along with former director S.V., former secretary M.A., and a suspect named B.K., were taken into custody and taken to the police station to have their statements taken. During the searches, a large number of digital materials and documents from within the cooperative were seized for examination. It was reported that the investigation was deepened based on complaints that appraisal fees were collected without documentation at the cooperative.

A detailed report prepared by the Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK), which became involved in the investigation process, revealed findings supporting the allegations. The report determined that there was an abnormal and difficult-to-explain financial movement totaling 11 million 482 thousand lira in the cooperative accounts of the suspects. This amount pointed to a magnitude that could not be reconciled with the cooperative's general operations and member payments, reinforcing the possibility of a major fraud. Among the allegations were that unfair deductions were made from members or vehicle owners and these incomes were used off the record. MASAK's financial analysis was accepted by the prosecutor's office as sufficient evidence to refer the suspects to the court with a request for detention.

After the procedures at the police and gendarmerie were completed, the 4 suspects in custody were referred to Kuşadası Courthouse. Here, the suspects' proceedings before the Duty Magistrate Judge continued for a long time. In light of the indictment prepared by the prosecutor's office, the MASAK report, and the collected evidence, a decision was made on whether the suspects should be released or not. The court ruled for the detention of Chairman Hüsnü Öten, former manager S.V., and former secretary M.A., who were authorized in the management of the cooperative and thought to control financial flows. This development brought to light the seriousness of the investigation and the magnitude of the crime.

Following the detention decisions, it was learned that suspect B.K. was released, while the event caused wide repercussions in front of the courthouse and in the public. While it is evaluated that B.K. was released because his place and accusation in the file were lighter than the others or due to insufficient evidence, the sending of the three main defendants to prison drew attention. The detained suspects began their prison life in the penitentiary they were sent to, while cooperative members and tradesmen in the region follow the results of the operation with concern. Currently, a situation of uncertainty has arisen in the management of the cooperative, and new developments are expected as the legal processes continue.

While the political and social repercussions of the event continue, the recent financial statement and management approach of the Kuşadası Şoför Esnaf Kefalet Kooperatifi have been put under the microscope. The allegation that institutional resources were used for personal interests by abusing the democratic structure of tradesmen's cooperatives carries a warning nature for similar structures. The event, described as an 11 million lira fraud, reinforced the thought that cooperative principles were violated. In the coming days, it is expected that the prosecutor's office will deepen the investigation and that those who claim to have suffered harm from the cooperative will be included in the case as victims.
