Unity Government Shaken in Malaysia: New Crack with Coalition Partner in Melaka

Although the Malaysian unity government led by Prime Minister Enver İbrahim survives at the federal level, the fragile alliance at the state level is experiencing severe tensions. The Pakatan Harapan (PH) party suffered a heavy election defeat in the state of Johor against its federal coalition partner Barisan Nasional (BN).

Following this rift, the crisis has also spread to the state of Melaka. A constitutional amendment bill, which allows the Melaka government to appoint a maximum of seven unelected state council members with voting rights, caused a division between the parties. Five lawmakers from the PH voted against the bill.

Despite the opposition of PH lawmakers, the legislative amendment passed the state assembly with a vote of 23-5. These developments reveal the state-level power struggles and disagreements among the parties forming the unity government in Malaysian politics.
