Masdar starts construction of $1.4 billion wind farm in Kazakhstan

Masdar has officially launched the construction of a 1 GW wind farm in southern Kazakhstan, equipped with an industrial-scale battery storage system. The project aims to enhance the region's energy security and represents a total investment of $1.4 billion. This is a significant step towards Kazakhstan's renewable energy targets. Once fully operational, the wind farm is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 3.5 million homes annually.

The project is part of Kazakhstan's goal to increase the share of renewable energy to 15% by 2030. Masdar, a UAE-based renewable energy company, continues its expansion strategy in Central Asia. The company has previously developed solar projects in Kazakhstan. This wind farm will be one of the largest renewable energy investments in the country. The battery storage system will mitigate the intermittency of wind power, ensuring a stable energy supply.

Construction is scheduled to be completed by 2026. The project will create over 1,000 jobs during the construction phase and around 100 permanent positions during operation. The Kazakh government is improving regulations to attract more renewable energy investments. The country aims to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and lower carbon emissions.

The wind farm will play a critical role in meeting the electricity demand of southern Kazakhstan, which currently relies heavily on thermal power plants. While it will not replace these plants, it will diversify the energy mix. The storage system will allow excess energy to be stored and used during peak demand, contributing to grid stability.

Masdar's investment could boost interest in renewable energy across Central Asia. Despite abundant solar and wind resources, the region has underutilized them. Kazakhstan's leadership in this area could serve as a model for neighboring countries. The project is also expected to prevent approximately 2 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, supporting international climate goals.
