Hennepin County Attorney Moriarty Stepping Down: Who Will Replace Her?

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty assumed office in 2023, leaving behind her unique career as a public defender. While her background supported her reformist approach and vision for building a more understanding system for offenders, it also became the biggest weapon for her critics. Throughout her tenure, she was frequently targeted by claims that she was too lenient with criminals and indifferent to crime. As a result of this intense criticism and political pressure, Moriarty announced in August 2025 that she would not run in the next election. Her decision left a significant void in the region's legal and political agenda, raising the question of who will replace her.

The district where five candidates are competing for the seat Moriarty will vacate hosted a candidate forum on Thursday evening. Organized by the Minneapolis Voters League in Golden Valley, the event saw five hopeful candidates try to introduce themselves to the voters. The most repeated word of the night was "experience," emphasized by almost all the candidates. The candidates tried to explain why their professional and legal backgrounds made them the best prepared to inherit Moriarty's legacy and to run the office for the right reasons. This forum provided the first clear preview of the key debate topics and political discourses of the upcoming election period, signaling how fierce the competition will be.
