Nigeria to provide free healthcare and minimum pension guarantee to retirees

The federal government of Nigeria announced that it will launch new programs aimed at improving the living conditions of retirees within the next three months. Omolola Oloworaran, Director-General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), detailed these steps at a press conference held at the Presidential Palace in Abuja. Under the new regulations, a minimum pension guarantee and free healthcare services for retirees in need will be provided.

By simplifying pension processes with modern technologies, the government has ensured that retirees' rights are paid within 48 hours provided the conditions are met. Additionally, PenCom has tightened its audits to ensure employers comply with their legal obligations. In the last two years, it managed to recover 36 billion Naira in unpaid pension contributions, a figure recorded as a higher achievement than in all previous years.

The pension system will be expanded to include informal workers such as private sector employees, artisans, farmers, and drivers. The government is also exploring ways to utilize a portion of the pension funds to invest in development projects such as roads, electricity, agriculture, education, and healthcare. These steps are being implemented as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's policy to guarantee a dignified retirement for every worker.
