Award-Winning Documentary Pioneers National Campaign for Trauma and Reconciliation in Kamboçya

An award-winning documentary that has garnered international acclaim is at the center of a massive national campaign in Kamboçya aimed at fostering dialogue on trauma, resilience, and reconciliation. The film, which focuses on the life of a former child soldier of the Kızıl Kemerler regime, specifically targets the younger generations who have not directly experienced the country's decades of conflict. Kamboçyalı authorities believe that such cinematic projects not only help keep historical memory alive but also assist in healing the wounds of violence. The 'Broken Courage' National Campaign was officially launched on 29 Haziran at Legend Cinema, located in Exchange Square, Phnom Penh. Realized in collaboration with the Bophana Görsel-İşitsel Kaynak Merkezi, Kamboçya Film Komisyonu, and LW Scientific, this initiative promises to be much more than an ordinary film screening. As part of the comprehensive program, the documentary will be taken to educational institutions and community centers across the country to reach a large audience. In addition to the screenings, discussion sessions will be held with experts on topics such as peacebuilding, mental health, trauma healing, and leadership. The organizers state that this interactive approach aims to facilitate audiences in confronting the past and developing social awareness.

Directed by Kanadalı director David Peck and produced in partnership with Kamboçyalı partners, the documentary conveys the human dimension of war and tyranny from a highly personal perspective. The film focuses on the extraordinary life struggle of the main character, a former child soldier of the Kızıl Kemerler, who later becomes a prisoner of war and a landmine victim. The organizers believe that this story not only reminds people of the pain but also highlights people's determination, dignity, and potential for transformation. Furthermore, this initiative aims to break down the taboos surrounding mental health, a topic of increasing importance in Kamboçya. Understanding how trauma affects individuals, families, and communities, even after the conflict has ended, is seen as a critical step in building lasting peace.

Founded by world-renowned Kamboçyalı filmmaker Rithy Panh, the Bophana Merkezi is known as one of the country's most important audiovisual archives and cultural institutions. While preserving the country's audiovisual heritage, the center also undertakes a mission dedicated to promoting cultural education, creative expression, and public dialogue through film. The launch event brought together representatives from civil society organizations, educational institutes, government agencies, and development partners, emphasizing the importance of cross-sector collaboration.
