5.1 magnitude earthquake in Peru's Junín region: 5 dead, more than 300 people affected

At least 5 people lost their lives in the 5.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred during the night hours of 18 July in Chupaca province, located in Peru's Junín region. More than 20 people were injured and approximately 300 people were left homeless in the tremor, which occurred at a depth of 24 kilometers. In a statement made by the National Defense Institute (Indeci), it was noted that the epicenter of the tremor was the Çongos Bajo region.

Large-scale damage occurred especially in old houses built with traditional materials such as adobe and wattle and daub due to the earthquake. While approximately 100 meters of road cracks and landslides were reported in the region, the historic Kanikruz Church was also affected by the earthquake. A team consisting of government officials and experts was dispatched to the region, where damage assessment efforts are ongoing.

As part of emergency response, fire department, police, and army rapid response teams are supporting search and rescue efforts. While temporary shelter areas are being set up in the region, mobile health teams (SAMU) have been dispatched for the treatment of the injured. Officials urged the public to remain calm and keep their emergency kits ready against possible aftershocks.
