Deputy Resul Kurt: Fighting Drugs is Our Common Responsibility

AK Party Deputy Chairman of Civil Society and Public Relations, Adıyaman MP and member of the TBMM Planning and Budget Commission Assoc. Prof. Dr. Resul Kurt held an important meeting on the occasion of June 26, the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Kurt received Leyla Yağanoğlu, President of the Association for Combating Drugs and Education (UMDER), and her accompanying delegation at the AK Party Headquarters. During the meeting, they discussed increasing social awareness in the fight against drugs and the role of civil society organizations. Kurt emphasized that drug addiction is not only an individual but also a societal problem. He stated that everyone must fulfill their responsibilities in this regard.

Resul Kurt pointed out that the fight against drugs can only succeed through the joint efforts of not only state institutions but the entire society. He highlighted the importance of educational activities, especially for protecting and raising awareness among young people. He said that families, schools, and civil society organizations play a critical role in preventing drug addiction. Kurt also stressed the need to expand treatment and rehabilitation services in the fight against addiction. In this context, he expressed appreciation for the work of associations like UMDER.

UMDER President Leyla Yağanoğlu provided information about the projects they carry out as an association. She explained that they aim to raise awareness through educational seminars organized in schools and youth centers. Yağanoğlu noted that early intervention is vital in the fight against drugs. She also mentioned that they have developed vocational training programs to reintegrate addicted individuals into society. She stated that they work in cooperation with state institutions and wish to strengthen this collaboration further.

The meeting also addressed the challenges faced in combating drugs. The spread of synthetic drugs and their increasing use among young people have reached alarming levels. Kurt emphasized the need for more effective measures and updating legal regulations. He also touched upon the importance of international cooperation, stating that cross-border operations against drug trafficking should be increased. The meeting highlighted that drug addiction is not only a health issue but also a security and social problem.

Finally, Resul Kurt noted that June 26, the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, is an important opportunity to raise awareness on this issue. He called on everyone to support this struggle. He stated that the fight against drugs is an effort that should continue throughout the year, not just for one day. Kurt added that the state is ready to provide all kinds of support, but all segments of society must also take an active role. The meeting ended with mutual good wishes.
