Participatory transformation for Montanari Gardens in Riccione is beginning

The major urban renewal project envisaging the redevelopment of the Montanari gardens located in the city of Riccione, Italy, is entering a new phase based on the direct participation and sharing of citizens. To include the public in this comprehensive transformation process, the local administration applied for an innovative participation process within the scope of the 2026 Participation Call by the Emilia-Romagna Region. The initiative aims to actively involve youth, schools, civil society organizations, cultural formations, and economic actors to accompany the works. In this way, both a coordinated information flow with the public and businesses will be provided to minimize the negative impacts of the construction phase, and this part of the city will maintain its vibrancy and accessibility even during the transformation process.

The envisaged date for the physical start of the project has been set as the opening of coordinated work areas in the city center within the upcoming October. According to the mandatory obligations brought by the funding sources used, all structures must be completed by the beginning of 2029. However, the local administration plans to narrow this timeframe as a scheduled goal and finish all renewal works before the predetermined date. This early completion strategy is designed to reduce the inconveniences faced by the residents living in the area and the operating economic businesses to the lowest possible level.

Since the project came to the agenda, discussions have emerged, especially on social media platforms and in some news sources, that the historic swimmer fountain in the gardens will be relocated. The administration had to clarify the issue by stating that these claims are completely unfounded. According to official statements, the historic fountain in question will absolutely not be removed and will not be interfered with in any way within the scope of the renewal works to be carried out. It was emphasized that the news circulating regarding this situation does not reflect the truth, and the public was asked not to be concerned.

The interventions in the Montanari gardens, supported by urban renewal funds, have been planned to focus entirely on specific strategic objectives. The main axis of the works is based on increasing the tourist attractiveness and commercial potential of the city center. At the same time, the adoption of state-of-the-art solutions in accordance with environmental sustainability principles is an indispensable part of the project. Taking measures to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change will ensure that the gardens are shaped as a future-ready area.
