RSS Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat Speaks on Universal Unity in New York

RSS Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat delivered a keynote address at the 'Universal Unity Celebration' held at Madison Square Garden in New York on August 29. The event, organized by the AHEAD Forum in collaboration with over 135 Hindu-American organizations, brought together more than 5,000 Indian-Americans and 180 religious leaders from 30 countries. Taking place on the occasion of the RSS's centenary year and the Raksha Bandhan festival, the gathering emphasized universal brotherhood under the theme of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (the world is one family).

In his 42-minute speech, Bhagwat avoided political topics and drew a philosophical distinction between models of managing diversity. He contrasted the United States' 'pluralism' model with Bharat's (India's) understanding of 'unity in diversity,' arguing that India's mission is to demonstrate that diversity and unity can coexist without negating each other. Religious leaders signed a five-point resolution rejecting the use of religion to legitimize hatred and pledging to defend the dignity of every community under the banner of 'One World One Humanity'.

While the event enhanced the RSS's global visibility as a cultural movement, it also drew reactions: the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) called for a visa revocation, and New York City Council Member Zohran Mamdani protested the rally, finding the RSS vision exclusionary. In response, the RSS stated the platform was open for dialogue and invited critics as well. This debate highlighted why the concept of universal unity resonates at a time when American society grapples with its own issues of social cohesion, pluralism, and identity.
