AI solution for communication failures and violence in healthcare

Kocaeli Health and Technology University has developed an AI-supported simulation platform to help healthcare students improve their communication skills with patients and relatives. The platform was created in collaboration between the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences. Students can practice written and verbal communication through virtual patient scenarios. The AI analyzes their performance in areas such as empathy, effective communication, and professional attitude, providing personalized feedback. The platform is expected to be integrated into courses starting next academic year.

Effective communication is the foundation of quality healthcare. Prof. Dr. Yurdanur Dikmen emphasized that poor communication between healthcare workers and patients leads to decreased patient satisfaction and can even result in violence. Therefore, the university aims to teach communication not only theoretically but also practically. The new platform allows students to apply their theoretical knowledge in realistic scenarios, addressing this critical need.

The platform was developed as a joint effort between the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering. Engineering students implemented the project as their graduation thesis. Students choose from scientifically designed scenarios that include steps such as self-introduction, empathy, and patient assessment. The system supports both written and verbal practice, enabling students to work at their own pace anytime.

AI provides personalized feedback by identifying errors in students' communication skills. Students can see their weaknesses and practice correct techniques. The system will be integrated into the university's existing Student Success Analysis System for use in courses. This ensures that graduates are better equipped to communicate effectively with patients and their families.

The project reflects a multidisciplinary approach. Healthcare professionals identified the needs, while computer scientists developed the algorithms and coding. The platform has received full marks from students and highlights the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. The university aims to enhance healthcare service quality by combining health and technology to improve students' communication skills.
