Chilean opposition plans to appeal to the Constitutional Court against the economic mega-reform

The Chilean opposition is working intensely on a plan to appeal to the Constitutional Court (TC) against the economic mega-reform prepared by the government palace, La Moneda. The legal team of opposition lawmakers is preparing at least two separate constitutional appeals through the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. The main focus of the appeals consists of provisions regarding tax stability and environmental assessment resolutions (RCA).

Opposition spokespersons state that the likelihood of making a total of four separate appeals covering the same issues in both chambers is increasingly strengthening. In this scenario, the goal is to collect the signatures of 39 deputies for each appeal from the Chamber of Deputies, and 13 from the Senate. Raúl Leiva, President of the Socialist Party Chamber of Deputies Group, stated that both wings are acting with a joint strategy that will complement each other. The names of the new lawyers who will replace constitutional lawyer Tomás Jordán, who initially served in the legal coordination of the appeal process, have not yet been clarified. However, it is known that on the Senate side, together with the legal teams of other lawmakers on the Environment Committee, they have prepared the environment-focused appeal text.
