Post-Assad first parliament convened in Syria: Assembly Speaker Abdülhamid el-Avvak elected

In the transition process established following the end of Bashar al-Assad's rule in Syria, the new parliament held its first session in Damascus. Members of parliament began their duties in the historic session, which was also attended by Head of State Ahmed al-Sharaa, and in the vote held, former Judge Abdülhamid el-Avvak was elected Speaker of the Assembly, receiving 99 votes.

Head of State Ahmed al-Sharaa, speaking in the parliament, emphasized that the country has entered a new era after years of war and that state institutions need to be rebuilt. Al-Sharaa stated that ensuring economic development, strengthening the investment environment, and governance based on the rule of law are the primary goals.

United Nations Deputy Special Envoy for Syria Claudio Cordone described the meeting as a key turning point in the country's political transformation. While the other members of the Assembly's Presidency Council were also determined at the opening session, it was announced that the parliament's next session will be held on 26 July 2026.
