AI-Powered BumiTrust Wins DST Innovation Awards

In the 4th edition of the DST Innovation Awards held in Brunei's capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, the BumiTrust team, offering an AI-powered agricultural technology solution, won the first prize. This major achievement was secured as a result of a six-week intensive entrepreneurship incubator program launched by Brunei to nurture future technology leaders. In this exciting competition named Catalyst Programme Cycle 4, BumiTrust stood out with a smart AI platform that monitors soil conditions and certifies crop safety for local farmers and stakeholders. This flagship entrepreneurship initiative, organized by Datastream Digital (DST) and DST InnoLab, aims to foster innovation and entrepreneurship among Bruneian youth, especially university students. Thus, by encouraging young minds to produce innovative technological solutions to sectoral problems, a significant contribution is made to the country's digital transformation.

In the finals of the competition, eight different teams presented their projects to the jury in various fields such as agriculture, health, tourism, and sustainability. Among these teams, three outstanding projects managed to secure the top spots with their innovative ideas. Alongside BumiTrust's championship, the Phyto team (Guardian AI), which developed an AI-based early diagnosis platform supporting cognitive health interventions, secured the first runner-up position. The team named Venyu, which stood out with its real-time reservation feature, verified listings, and transparent pricing system, took home the second runner-up award. These projects garnered great appreciation for bringing technology-driven approaches to today's most pressing societal and industrial challenges.

The AI-based agriculture platform presented by the champion BumiTrust sets a groundbreaking example of how modern agricultural practices can be digitized. The core function of the system includes continuously analyzing the quality and current condition of the soil to recommend the most efficient crop cultivation methods to farmers. Furthermore, this platform has the capacity to provide reliable certificates to consumers and stakeholders by auditing the compliance of the grown crops with safety standards. Such innovative technologies can play a critical role in transforming traditional farming methods into a more sustainable and profitable structure. Other projects that did not make it to the top ranks also offered remarkable solutions in their respective sectors, enhancing the overall quality of the competition. Teams such as Nawaitu (SEEK), BruDeTour, Rehijau, Seroja (T*AP), and Halal4N presented a wide variety of ideas addressing community and industry-oriented challenges to the jury members. Each project was seen to contain unique technological approaches to solve current problems encountered. This diversity demonstrated that the DST Innovation Awards created an environment of idea exchange where creative thoughts converge, rather than just being a competition. All participants hold the potential to further develop their projects into commercial products in the future.

The event, which culminated in a grand closing ceremony held at Mutiara Exchange, allowed for a strong bridge to be built between academia and industry.
