A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Japan, followed by 27 aftershocks in the first two hours.

The strongest aftershock occurred about an hour after the main earthquake. The earthquake, which occurred near Kumamoto Prefecture, was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers.
