Fatal accident by drunk driver in Adana caught on camera

The tragic traffic accident that occurred in the Seyhan district of Adana took place on the morning of July 7 on Bülent Angın Boulevard. The passenger minibus driven by 45-year-old Mehmet L. hit 23-year-old Ümmü Elsun, who was crossing at the pedestrian crossing, causing a horrific accident. After the accident, the young woman, who was severely injured, was immediately taken to Seyhan Devlet Hastanesi, but despite all interventions performed there, she could not be saved. Immediately after the incident, the driver, who fled the scene, was caught shortly after following a large-scale investigation launched by police teams. With the driver being arrested and sent to prison, the process was moved to the judicial phase.

Traffic teams arriving at the scene conducted an alcohol check on driver Mehmet L. to clarify his condition at the time of the accident. The measurement revealed that the driver had 2.63 per mille of alcohol in his blood, clearly showing that the driver was heavily under the influence of alcohol, well above the legal limit. This high per mille value demonstrated that the driver's ability to drive was seriously impaired and that he posed a great danger in traffic. The driver was fined a total of 100 thousand TL in administrative penalties for driving under the influence and fleeing the scene after the accident. Additionally, it was decided to confiscate his driver's license for 2 years.

The footage recorded second-by-second how the vehicle driven by the drunk driver hit the young woman at the pedestrian crossing. These images revealed both the violence of the crash and the fact that the driver did not brake or maneuver at all in the face of the dangerous situation that occurred at the pedestrian crossing. The submission of the dashcam footage as judicial evidence played a critical role in the process of elucidating the incident. Authorities stated that such footage is used as a crucial piece of evidence in both accident analyses and judicial processes.

Within the scope of the judicial process initiated after the incident, Mehmet L. was caught red-handed in Namık Kemal Mahallesi by the teams of the Seyhan İlçe Emniyet Müdürlüğü Suç Önleme ve Araştırma Büro Amirliği. After his procedures at the police station were completed, the driver was arrested by the court he was brought to at the courthouse. The court did not deem it necessary for the driver to be tried without arrest, considering the serious charges such as driving under the influence, causing an accident, and fleeing the scene. With the driver sent to prison, the trial process has begun. The lawyers of the victim's family stated that they will follow the case closely and strive for the maximum penalty to be given.
