2 people lost their lives in the car that crashed into a TIR in the emergency lane in Adana

In the tragic accident that occurred on the highway route within the borders of Ceyhan district of Adana, two people in the car that rear-ended a broken-down TIR lost their lives. The incident took place near the Ceyhan-Yumurtalık Serbest Bölge junction, on the section used by vehicles heading towards İskenderun. It was determined that the victims were the driver of the car, Zafer Köse, and the passenger in the vehicle, Salih Üstündağ. Upon notification, health, gendarmerie, and fire brigades were dispatched to the scene. The unfortunate incident also briefly disrupted the flow of traffic on the highway.

According to the details of the incident, based on initial findings, a trailer-less TIR with the foreign license plate BS5440A, driven by an individual named S.B., allegedly broke down and stopped on the road while in motion. Upon the vehicle breaking down, the driver pulled his vehicle over to the emergency lane of the highway and stopped it, in accordance with traffic safety rules. However, the car driven by Zafer Köse, traveling in the same direction, crashed into the back of the TIR for reasons that have not yet been fully clarified, such as distraction or visibility distance. The impact of the collision caused the car to be reduced to wreckage, resulting in the death of the two individuals inside the vehicle at the scene. A large-scale investigation was launched in the area following the accident.

The health teams that responded to the accident determined that Zafer Köse and Salih Üstündağ in the car lost their lives despite all their medical interventions. The gendarmerie teams inspecting the scene launched a comprehensive investigation regarding the accident. Authorities began collecting technical data regarding why the car failed to see the TIR stopped in the emergency lane and the instantaneous speed at the moment of the collision. Other potential damages inside the vehicle and whether safety measures were functioning were also placed under scrutiny within the scope of the investigation. In addition, the TIR driver's statement was taken, and details such as the cause of the vehicle's breakdown and the duration of its stay in the emergency lane were questioned.

Traffic safety experts point out that serious accidents can occur even when heavy vehicles that break down on highways wait in the emergency lane. Especially during nighttime hours or in conditions of reduced visibility, situations where fast-moving light vehicles fail to notice stationary TIRs are among the common causes of fatal accidents. Experts emphasize that in order to prevent such accidents, reflective warning triangles must be placed behind broken-down vehicles and all four hazard flashers must be left on. Furthermore, it is stressed that drivers must keep their attention sharp on long and monotonous roads and exercise utmost care regarding following distance. Such traffic accidents once again highlight the importance of raising driver awareness regarding compliance with existing traffic rules.
