2 People Lost Their Lives in Apartment Explosion in Çorlu, Natural Gas Suspected

A tragic incident that occurred late at night in the Çorlu district of Tekirdağ caused great sorrow and panic in the region. A powerful explosion occurred around 23.00 in an apartment on the top floor of the 6-story Adalet Apartmanı located in Cemaliye Mahallesi Borsa Meydanı. Under the influence of the explosion, the apartment surrendered to the flames, while serious damage occurred to the window and wall sections on the front facade of the building.

Following the loud explosion, residents living nearby and building residents were evacuated in great fear, and a large number of teams were dispatched to the scene due to the urgency of the situation. The timely intervention of police, health, fire department, and AFAD teams ensured the fire was brought under control before it could grow, and extinguishing work was successfully carried out. However, the scale of the disaster began to become clear during checks made after the fire was extinguished.

In initial investigations, it was determined that one person in the apartment lost their life at the scene, and three injured individuals were immediately taken to the hospital. Despite the best efforts of doctors, although one of the injured, who was under treatment at the hospital, was in critical condition, they could not be saved and lost their battle for life in the hospital. With this development, the number of fatalities in the explosion rose to two, while it was reported that the treatment of the other two injured continues and their condition is stable.

Çorlu Kaymakamı Niyazi Erten, who arrived at the scene to conduct investigations, shared initial information regarding the probable cause of the explosion and stated that according to initial assessments, the likelihood of the explosion being caused by natural gas is strong. Erten announced that a total of 89 people reside in the building and that the building has been temporarily evacuated as a security precaution, and necessary works have been initiated to meet the sheltering needs of the residents.

Teams have commenced detailed technical examinations in the building to reveal the definite cause of the explosion, while a broad-ranging investigation regarding the issue is being pursued. It is reported that efforts are continuing intensely to identify the deceased and that authorities are on duty diligently to elucidate the incident. Support teams from Tekirdağ and surrounding districts have taken all necessary measures to ensure security and order in the region.
