2 People Lost Their Lives in Natural Gas Explosion in Çorlu, Debris Revealed at Daybreak

The natural gas explosion that occurred late at night in Hıdırağa Mahallesi, Çorlu district of Tekirdağ, caused great panic and fear throughout the district, while the true extent of the disaster became clear with the break of dawn. The intensity of the explosion, which started on the top floor of a 6-story apartment building and created a bomb-like effect, revealed the extent of the damage that could not be seen in the dark of night to the eyes in the daylight. In the investigations at the scene, it was observed that there was not a stone left unturned in the apartment where the explosion was centered, the outer facade completely collapsed, and rubble was scattered around.

As a result of the violent blast wave, the outer facade walls of the apartment shattered and were swept downwards, while concrete blocks, iron joinery and household items flew meters away. The heavy structural damage on the front of the apartment building caused major material damage to many vehicles parked on the street due to massive pieces falling from above. The apartment where the explosion occurred became completely unusable, turning into a pile of rubble, and cracks and damage were also detected in other parts of the building.

The identities and details of the casualties in this heartbreaking disaster began to become clear; 34-year-old Caner Meriç lost his life tragically at the scene at the time of the explosion. Muhammed El Hüseyin, a Syrian national who was taken to Çorlu State Hospital by ambulance with serious injuries, could not be saved despite the intensive efforts of the doctors and lost his battle for life. While the treatment of one of the other 2 people injured in the event continues meticulously at the hospital, the other person with minor injuries was discharged after treatment.

Following the incident, police and fire crews took extensive security measures in the region, completely closing the street to vehicle and pedestrian traffic and conducting detailed investigations. Natural gas distribution company officials and crime scene investigation teams are conducting uninterrupted inspections on the building's gas lines and technical infrastructure to determine the exact cause of the explosion. Officials are trying to prepare the technical report of the incident by evaluating every possibility within the scope of the investigation.

The neighborhood residents, shaken by the violence of the explosion, expressed that they experienced great trauma by describing the moments of horror they experienced at night and their feelings at that time. Citizens said that they woke up with a deafening bomb sound, went outside, and saw that everywhere was in ruins, wondering what had hit them. The grief experienced by those who saw the lifeless bodies of their neighbors swept into the garden of the building by the force of the explosion, and the silence prevailing in the neighborhood, once again revealed how painful a picture the incident painted.
