Will Republicans Allow Trump to Exit the Iran War and Economic Crisis?

U.S. President Donald Trump is furious with a handful of Senate Republicans who voted against him on Iran war powers. By all accounts, the Senate Republican Party luncheon turned into a near-brawl. According to Louisiana Republican Senator John Kennedy, Trump was as mad as a "killer hornet" at these rebellious senators. It was notable that after the meeting, Trump treated his Iranian negotiating partners more kindly than the senators from his own party who refused to pass the SAVE Act. However, some Republican figures agreed to change their votes to strengthen Trump's bargaining position as the White House appeared determined to end the war.

Even harder to understand is the stance of the many Republican lawmakers who are angered by the attempts of Trump and especially Vice President J.D. Vance to get the country out of this crisis. These pro-war lawmakers realize that if the Republicans' message going into the midterm elections is "yes to war, no to prosperity," they could lose their seats, committee chairmanships, and even their political careers. It appears these members of Congress are failing to fully grasp what a massive threat the Iran War poses to their own political futures. Vance and Trump's efforts to rid themselves of this troublesome war are facing resistance from within their own party. Republican leaders are facing a serious dilemma over focusing on the country's domestic issues rather than foreign policy adventures as tough elections approach.

From the perspective of the American economy, inflation has spiked to 4.1 percent, a dangerous level, according to the Federal Reserve's preferred measure. This figure means it is more than twice the rate the central bank deems necessary for basic price stability. Having shown a cooling trend over the past few years and in the early parts of Trump's second term, inflation has been revived by the surge in energy prices triggered by the war. The inflation rate appears to have returned to the 41-year record highs seen during the Joe Biden era. This economic devastation caused by the war is rapidly eroding the purchasing power of ordinary citizens and creating massive public dissatisfaction.

What remains even more impactful is that the Iran War is directly fueling the current cost-of-living crisis and the housing crisis. Voters are so fed up with the high cost of living that they have even started turning to socialist policies with the promise of a cheaper life. There is an important historical lesson to remember: If the Iraq War had not occurred, the Democrats would never have secured the majority needed to pass the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). The voters who carried Trump to victory in 2024 and won Senate control for the Republicans did not vote for high inflation and new foreign wars. During Trump's first term, despite taking a tough stance against Iranian clerics, tearing up Obama's nuclear deal, and eliminating Kasım Süleymani, he did not drag the country into a new war.

When he left office, Trump had managed to leave inflation at 1.4 percent, below the Federal Reserve's long-term target. Furthermore, he left no new war legacy for his successor to inherit in Iran or anywhere else. But this time, things are not moving so easily, and luck appears to have run out. Trump and Vance are doing everything they can to get out of this swamp or at least avoid sinking deeper into it. However, the strange part of this process is that the members of the legislature who might just save them are refusing to stop handing them shovels and demanding that they dig even deeper. The clash between hawks like Lindsey Graham and Vance's diplomacy continues to expose the party's internal division.
