The price index announced by Ceagesp, one of Brazil's leading food supply centers, recorded a decrease of 1.63 percent in June. This drop brought a sense of relief to the markets, following a notable increase of 3.15 percent observed in the previous month of May. Looking at the same period of the previous year, it is seen that there was a very slight decline of 0.13 percent in June. When evaluating the first six-month period of the year, it is noteworthy that the index still shows an increase of 4.26 percent. Considering a broad twelve-month timeframe, it is stated that the total price increase hovered at the 8.52 percent level.

According to the official statement published by Ceagesp authorities, the vegetable sector had the largest share in this positive trend in June. Among all analyzed sectors, the vegetable group stood out as the category experiencing the most significant decline of the month, with a sharp price drop of 8.94 percent. The main reason for this dramatic drop in the sector can be interpreted as the excessive supply increase, especially in popular tomato varieties, and the consequent normalization of prices. While Sweet Grape tomatoes experienced a serious price drop of 29.71 percent, cherry tomatoes also recorded a notable decline of 24.73 percent. These developments provided significant relief for consumers in the market, while also holding the potential to directly impact producers' income balances.

In contrast, despite the decline in general vegetables, significant price increases were observed in some specific product categories. For instance, the prices of a local pepper variety called pimenta cambuci rose by a high rate of 54.23 percent in June. Similarly, a remarkable increase of 39.47 percent occurred in jiló, a vegetable frequently consumed in Brazilian cuisine. It is evaluated that the price increases for such products stem from various market dynamics such as seasonal factors, harvesting timing disruptions, or specific regional climate conditions. Experts state that the volatility in such local products can be more fluctuating compared to the staple foods that determine the general course of broad indexes.

In the general fruit sector, prices showed a modest but nevertheless downward trend of 0.51 percent. In the fruit category, Hawaii papaya had the steepest drop, reducing its price by 31.84 percent, followed by watermelon with a 27.43 percent drop. However, despite this cheapening in watermelon and papaya, pitaia, also known as dragon fruit, broke a record with a surprising increase of 109.10 percent. Furthermore, Tommy Atkins mango prices rose by 43.87 percent, standing out as one of the main factors limiting the overall decline in the fruit sector. This contrast reveals that consumers can see significant price differentiations even within a single product group during their grocery shopping.

The greens (verduras) sector, on the other hand, unexpectedly moved in the opposite direction in June, rising with an increase of 6.67 percent. The 36.72 percent jump in curly lettuce prices and the 26.91 percent surge in flat lettuce prices were the main factors causing this sector to become more expensive overall. While greens generally increased, it was found that parsley prices fell by 27.35 percent and broccoli prices decreased by 25.17 percent. This mixed picture of food inflation reveals the complex structure regarding the supply chain, logistics processes, and seasonal production fluctuations in Brazil. As a result, although the June data shows that prices fell for some staple foods, it indicates that the cumulative increases over the year continue to exert financial pressure on households.
