Operation against begging network in Elazığ: They exploited citizens' emotions

A comprehensive operation was carried out across Elazığ province against an organized network involved in begging by exploiting the religious sentiments of citizens. Within the scope of the operation conducted by Elazığ Municipality Municipal Police Department teams, a group acting in an organized and targeted manner, particularly in mosque courtyards, busy squares, and the city's main transportation arteries, was caught red-handed. Investigations revealed that the individuals had formed a professional begging network and saw it as a source of income. During the operation by the municipal police teams, the network's detailed working principles and areas of activity were deciphered, and the group was handed over to the authorities.

Identity checks and address queries of the detained individuals determined that they had come to Elazığ solely for the purpose of begging and took part in the organization upon entering the city. It was determined that the individuals, who came from Osmaniye province, used the religious and social sensitivities in Elazığ as a tool to gain profit. These people, who were taken into custody by law enforcement officers to initiate legal proceedings, also attracted attention with their attitudes throughout the process. The group, referred to the Municipal Police Directorate building as per legal procedures, acted without showing any sign of regret or sadness for the crimes they committed.

The footage taken during the incident and administrative procedures clearly revealed the network's disregard for the respect and religious values of society. One of the suspects displayed a complete attitude of indifference towards the press members and cameras filming them, and was seen smiling and waving at the cameras. Another network member drew great reaction by entering the directorate building playing and laughing in an environment where it was clear that action would be taken against him. These attitudes suggested that the network members were unaware of the severity of the crime and saw this activity as an easy job.

Authorities and the municipal police directorate stated that such organized networks aimed at the peace and security of the city and abused the good intentions of the citizens. It was emphasized that citizens should be careful about people they want to help to prevent such incidents and report the situation to the authorities. Municipal officials announced that operations would continue uninterrupted on the grounds that begging activities disrupt public order and prevent aid from reaching those in real need.

Legal action was initiated against the captured network members for the crime of begging and misdemeanors under the Turkish Penal Code. It was learned that the suspects were handed over to police units to have their statements taken, and the necessary administrative and judicial investigations were launched against them. The Elazığ Municipality reported that similar inspections and operations would continue increasingly in the coming days for the city's aesthetics and the peace of the citizens, and thanked the public for their sensitivity.
