The Longest Table: Community Dinner to Bring Neighbors Together in Port Washington

The 'En Uzun Masa' event, scheduled to take place in Port Washington later this month, stands out as an important community dinner aimed at helping neighbors connect and strengthening neighborhood ties. This free event will be held at Sunset Park on Wednesday, 29 Temmuz, between 17.00 and 19.00, welcoming all local residents. While attendees are offered the opportunity to bring and share their favorite foods, the event expects both those who prefer to come with family and friends, and individuals coming alone who wish to meet new people. The simple yet powerful idea behind the event is to bring people together around a common table to reduce social isolation and foster solidarity. Such social gatherings are seen as an antidote to the growing sense of loneliness, particularly in large cities.

The 'En Uzun Masa' project was launched in 2022 as a national initiative by Maryam Banikarim and Andrew Lerner to address the growing problem of social isolation. The founders believed that gathering neighbors around a shared meal at a long table is one of the most natural ways to break down walls between people and forge new connections. Launched with this vision, the initiative quickly gained immense interest and has since spread to more than 30 cities nationwide. Community dinners held in parks, schoolyards, libraries, and closed-off streets have successfully brought together people from diverse backgrounds. All these events are coordinated through the NYCNext organization and presented to the public completely free of charge.

One of the most distinct features of the event is the absence of an official program or speeches; meaning, participants can focus solely on conversing with one another without the pressure of fundraising or long orations. North Hempstead Meclis Üyesi Mariann Dalimonte emphasized that there are no speeches or donation campaigns at the event, stating that it is simply an opportunity to strengthen the community through good food, good neighbors, and conversation. This approach, whose goal is to enable participants to establish sincere dialogues in a completely relaxed environment, paves the way for genuine human connections that are particularly rare in crowded and fast-paced modern life. People not only share a meal but also find the chance to share their stories and understand one another. This unstructured setting allows for quick and natural friendships to form, even among strangers.

This special event in Port Washington comes to life through the joint organization of Susan Berman from Sid Jacobson JCC and North Hempstead Meclis Üyesi Mariann Dalimonte. After visiting a similar community held in the Queens area, Dalimonte was highly enthusiastic about bringing the concept to her own district and personally oversaw the bureaucratic process. Before planning the local organization, Berman and Dalimonte visited an En Uzun Masa gathering in Queens to closely observe the event's operation. Dalimonte expressed how deeply affected she was by this warm atmosphere, noting that during that visit, the tables were decorated with tablecloths, candles, and even specific themes, and people were offering them food. This positive firsthand experience inspired them to create a similar sincerity and enthusiasm within their local community.

The organizers are currently looking for volunteer 'table captains' who will host sections of the community table and invite their neighbors to join. These table captains will play a key role in creating a hospitable and cheerful atmosphere by decorating their tables in their personal styles and encouraging conversation among guests. The event allows those who wish to organize their own tables with friends, neighbors, co-workers, or other community groups, while also offering those arriving alone the opportunity to connect with new people, leaving no one out. Those who wish to get more information about this unique gathering, which is open to all segments of the community, or who want to serve as a table captain, can get involved by contacting Susan Berman via email. Such local initiatives strengthen individuals' sense of belonging in their own neighborhoods, laying the foundation for more resilient and connected societies.
