Replacement of the Ponte al Pino Railway Bridge in Floransa Progressing as Planned

Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), the infrastructure management arm of the İtalya Devlet Demiryolları Grubu'nun (FS), is continuing its work to replace the Ponte al Pino railway overpass within the Floransa railway node. According to the project, which is managed from Arezzo and received an update on 7 Temmuz 2026, the works are proceeding smoothly while adhering to the predetermined schedule. The bridge in question is of critical importance for the regular and safe operation of the railway lines in the area. Following the successful completion of the cutting operations for the existing bridge superstructure, the first section of the old structure was removed. Currently, the works have entered their most intense phase with the stage of transporting the remaining sections of the bridge. These massive transport operations are carried out using a 2.000-ton crane. The giant crane in question has the capacity to lift structures weighing up to 1.600 tons. With this feature, it stands out as one of the largest and most powerful cranes used for such engineering interventions in Europe.

The operations in the first phase of the project are planned to continue in the coming days, and the removal processes of the old bridge are expected to be completely finished. In addition to this, fundamental ground preparation works are also being carried out for the demolition of the existing bridge piers and the placement of the new structure. The installation of the new bridge structure will be carried out in the second major phase of the project. A working window between 23.00 on 26 Temmuz Pazar and 11.00 on 30 Temmuz Perşembe has been allocated for this critical placement process. Authorities state that this timeframe has been meticulously planned to cause the least disruption to train services.

On the other hand, a comprehensive mobility plan has also been put into effect to minimize the negative impacts on railway traffic. Within the scope of this plan, train services are rescheduled and alternative transportation services are provided to ensure passengers are not inconvenienced. All transportation connections within the Floransa railway node are being tried to be maintained uninterruptedly through these alternative services. Authorities are ready to intervene instantly in case of any disruption by constantly monitoring passenger density and traffic flow. Thus, it is aimed that the daily travel plans of intra-city and intercity passengers are affected at the minimum possible level.

The project to replace the Ponte al Pino overpass constitutes only a small part of İtalya's vision to modernize and increase the capacity of its railway infrastructure.
