It has been reported that 265 journalists have lost their lives to date in the ongoing Israeli attacks that have continued relentlessly in the Gaza Strip since 8 Ekim 2023. These striking figures, announced by the Hükümetin Medya Ofisi in Gazze and based on data from the Filistinli Gazeteciler Sendikası, reveal the immense danger journalists in the region are working under. The fact that 27 of the deceased journalists are women demonstrates how this tragedy affects different demographic groups. Furthermore, it is stated that approximately 500 journalists were injured during the attacks, and out of the 1200 registered press members in the region, about 900 have lost their homes and been forced into displacement. According to these figures, journalism in Gazze has turned into one of the most dangerous professions in the world.

Journalists in Gazze are risking their lives to perform their duties in order to convey the humanitarian tragedy and conflicts occurring in the occupied territory to the world public. However, according to reports from international press organizations and local authorities, these journalists have become direct targets of the İsrail ordusu. Filistinli Gazeteciler Sendikası Başkanı Tahsin el-Estal stated that journalists follow the news under extremely difficult conditions and that a large majority of them have lost their homes or been displaced. Estal emphasized that İsrail is pursuing a deliberate strategy to cut off the flow of news in the region, silence the voices sharing the truth with the world, and completely destroy press activities. This situation is considered not only an individual tragedy but also a systematic and very serious violation of press freedom in the region.

The intensity and destructiveness of the attacks are so immense that more than 80 percent of the media offices and press organizations in Gazze have been destroyed. In addition to the demolition of offices, electricity cuts, fuel shortages, and general infrastructure damage in the region have made it impossible for journalists to work in permanent locations. Under these extremely difficult conditions, journalists have been forced to use squares, open spaces, and shelters as their offices to write and record their reports. Despite all these adversities and the constant threat of death, press members in the region continue their duty of documenting İsrail's military actions and civilian casualties with great determination. However, during this process, many journalists have lost their lives while on duty; some died in attacks on hospitals, while others were killed by being explicitly targeted.

In the later stages of the war, targeted attacks against media workers increased further, and employees of many international organizations lost their lives in these attacks. For example, in an attack on the Nasır Hastanesi in Han Yunus on 25 Ağustos 2025, a total of 5 journalists were killed: Reuters photojournalist Hüsam el-Mısri, Al Jazeera cameraman Muhammed Selame, Independent Arabia and AP reporter Meryem Ebu Dekka, and NBC News reporters Muaz Ebu Taha and Ahmed Ebu Aziz. Similarly, on 10 Ağustos 2025, as a result of the bombing of a tent where journalists were staying near Şifa Hastanesi, 6 journalists, including Al Jazeera correspondent Enes eş-Şerif and his colleague Muhammed Kureyka, who were known for their efforts to break Gazze's media blockade, lost their lives. In an attack on the El-Ehli Baptist Hastanesi in Haziran 2025, 3 journalists died, while in Ocak 2025, Anadolu Ajansı freelance cameraman Said Ebu Nebhan was targeted and killed by an İsrail sniper. In Ekim 2024, Hasan Hamad, who also worked for Anadolu Ajansı, lost his life during a bombardment.

Since the early periods of the war, attacks against journalists have drawn massive backlash from the international public and deeply shaken press activities in the region. In Aralık 2023, Anadolu Ajansı photojournalist Muntasır es-Savvaf and his brother, journalist Mervan, lost their lives in an İsrail attack, while in Kasım 2023, Bilal Cadallah was killed after his vehicle was targeted. In Ocak 2024, the journalist son of Al Jazeera correspondent Vail ed-Dahduh, Hamza ed-Dahduh, along with his colleague Mustafa Surayya, were killed in an airstrike on a vehicle belonging to journalists. Cameraman Samir Ebu Dakka, who was severely injured in this incident and suffered greatly as İsrail forces prevented medical intervention teams from reaching the area for hours, died from blood loss. These consecutive tragic events have led to the questioning of protection mechanisms for civilians and press members in conflict zones and have caused calls for the application of international law in Gazze to rise globally.
