Gen Afrifa's Unfulfilled Promise: The Parliamentary Seat Planned to Protect His 1966 Coup Comrades

In the political history of Ghana, the story of General Akwasi Amankwa Afrifa stands out as a symbol of the country's complex past, filled with military interventions and democratic transitions. Afrifa was one of the leading figures of the military coup that overthrew the then-leader Kwame Nkrumah on 24 Şubat 1966. However, years later, during the transition to democratic rule, he saw entering politics as a necessary step to protect his own life and his coup comrades. In a widely quoted letter he wrote to the head of government, Lieutenant General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong, he detailed this intention. This letter serves as a historical document that reveals the political insecurity and future anxiety Afrifa was experiencing.

In his letter, Afrifa stated that he was deeply concerned that members of the Convention People's Party (CPP) would seek revenge after the country's transition to civilian rule. According to his own account, to prevent soldiers from attempting coups in the future, it was even on the agenda that the 1966 coup plotters would be lined up and shot one by one. This frightening scenario made it very clear to him that he could not wait in peace at his farm. In his own words, the possibility of political laws being enacted to ensure the trial of the soldiers who participated in the coup had terrified him. For these reasons, despite seeing politics as the last thing he would do in his life, he decided to enter parliament to survive.

At the center of this survival strategy was the goal of gaining official immunity and political protection by entering the parliamentary elections in 1979. Afrifa believed that a parliamentary seat he would win would act as a shield for all military officials involved in the 1966 coup. He explicitly emphasized in his letter that his intention was not merely a search for individual power, but to protect his former brothers-in-arms from a potential political witch hunt. Accordingly, he ran for the Mampong North parliamentary seat from the Birleşik Ulusal Kongre (UNC) party. This bold step was the most concrete and strategic move he took to secure a place in the legislature of the Third Republic.

Afrifa's plan finally paid off when he succeeded in the elections, coming very close to his goal by being elected as a member of parliament from the Mampong North constituency in 1979. However, this political victory was not enough of a shield against the tragic end awaiting him. Just eight days after the elections, on 26 Haziran 1979, he was executed by firing squad by the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) led by Teğmen Jerry John Rawlings. Along with six other senior officers, including Lieutenant General Acheampong and Lieutenant General Akuffo, he was executed without trial on charges of corruption and abuse of power. Although he was an elected member of parliament, his death before he could be sworn in and assume his duties resulted in his plan being bitterly cut short.

The life and death of General Afrifa is an event of profound regional and historical significance regarding the uncertainty of military regimes and the unpredictability of African politics. His execution before he could sit in the seat he was elected to is one of the clearest pieces of evidence of the bloody and deep political wounds that marked Ghana's Third Republic period. Following his death, Ebenezer Augustus Kwasi Akuoko took over the representation duties of the Mampong North constituency, bringing this process to an end. The political tensions of that time, expressed in Afrifa's letters, are read as a cautionary tale showing how premature deaths and coups paralyzed the stability of the African continent. These dark pages of history still remind us today of the vital importance of preserving democratic institutions and the rule of law.
