Greenland Prime Minister Nielsen: Trump gave up on annexation idea but pressure continues

In the session titled 'One world, many views' held within the scope of the Economy Forum in Aix-en-Provence, France, Greenland Prime Minister Múte B. Egede (referred to as Jensen Frederik Nielsen in the text) and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot came together. Prime Minister Egede stated that due to his country's strategic position, they have been facing serious pressure originating from the US for the last two years, which he characterized as unacceptable, and emphasized that these pressures are still continuing. He expressed that during the visit of the US Special Representative to Greenland three days ago, they conveyed that Donald Trump has given up on the idea of annexing or purchasing Greenland, but this has not completely removed the de facto pressures. In his speech at the Forum, the Prime Minister also drew attention to global change processes, stating that they desire partnerships with countries that respect democracy, international law, and human rights, and that they will cooperate on security issues.

Prime Minister Egede expressed their satisfaction with the support given by the European Union and France during this crisis process, saying that Greenland will always stand by Europe and wants to act together with NATO and the Nordic countries. While advocating that they are seeking closer ties with Canada to strengthen their geopolitical position and that this would be beneficial for all parties, he pointed out that Greenland has significant potential for European countries to reduce their dependence on China in mining activities. It was understood that while positioning themselves economically and strategically, they pursue a policy of balance regarding who will process mineral resources and prioritize integration with the Western world.

Using one of the strongest expressions in his speech, the Prime Minister of Greenland emphasized national sovereignty by saying, 'Greenland will never give up its right to self-determination, we will never give up our principles, and we are not for sale.' This harsh move served as an open response to the demands of US President Donald Trump, who previously raised the issue of buying or seizing Greenland and faced reactions from the international public opinion. Egede shouted to the world that despite external pressures, they maintain their political will and it is not possible for them to be bought by any power.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, who also spoke at the session, gave full support to the stance displayed by the Prime Minister of Greenland against the 'vast and imperialist pressure' of the USA. Barrot stated that Prime Minister Egede showed incredible courage during this process, underlining that the people of Greenland chose Europe and NATO, and that their sovereignty cannot be a bargaining chip. With the words 'Greenland is not for sale, it is not something that can be taken,' the French Minister gave a message of solidarity against the US administration and demonstrated how determined Europe is to protect sovereignty rights in its immediate vicinity.

These developments once again revealed how sensitive the dimension of geopolitical struggles and resource competition in the Arctic region has reached. Caught between the USA's desire to increase its influence in the region and the efforts of Europe and its allies to prevent this expansion, Greenland is using diplomatic traffic at the highest level. The 'soft message' from the US Special Representative that 'the idea of annexation was abandoned' was balanced by Prime Minister Egede's words that 'pressure still continues'. These discussions at the Forum showed that Greenland is trying to strike a balance between China, the US, and Europe in future mining projects and military strategies, and clearly prefers the Western alliance.
