Tragedy in İzmir Irrigation Canal: One Child Lost Their Life, Another Rescued

In the Menemen district of İzmir, a tragic accident that occurred in the evening hours plunged the local community into deep sorrow. Two children playing near an irrigation canal were suddenly swept away by the current and fell into the canal due to the rapid flow of water. Immediately after the incident, a rescue operation was launched with the intervention of nearby citizens, and health teams were dispatched to the area due to the urgency of the situation.

Thanks to the efforts of those participating in the rescue, Bünyamin F. (8), one of the children struggling in the water, was extracted with difficulty and brought to a safe area. After initial intervention at the scene, Bünyamin F. was taken to the nearest health institution by ambulance and received treatment. Although initial details regarding the severity of his condition were not clear, it was reported that the child had overcome the life-threatening risk and his observation in the hospital continues.

Unfortunately, the outcome was not as hopeful for the other child swept away by the current, 6-year-old Ahmed Sido. Despite the intense efforts of rescue teams and locals, it was unfortunately not possible to reach [save] the child when he was removed from the water. It was determined that Ahmed Sido lost his life despite all medical interventions performed after he was extracted from the water, revealing the tragic dimension of the event.

Menemen Emniyet Müdürlüğü teams launched an extensive investigation around the canal to shed light on the details of the event and fully understand the circumstances. As the investigation deepens, the lifeless body of little Ahmed Sido was taken to the Adli Tıp Kurumu morgue for autopsy procedures. The circumstances regarding how the children fell into the canal and the sequence of events continue to be meticulously examined by the authorities.

This tragic event has once again revealed how dangerous water bodies such as irrigation canals and rivers can be in open areas. It is possible to face fatal consequences at any moment, especially when young children play in such areas without paying attention to their depth and the intensity of the current. Authorities and security forces repeatedly warn families to keep their children away from these regions and to take necessary precautions by the water.
