Two Young People Lose Their Lives While Swimming in Kapshagay Reservoir

In a tragic incident in Kapshagay Reservoir located in the city of Konayev, Almaty region of Kazakhstan, a young girl born in 2006 and a young boy born in 2004 lost their lives by drowning. The incident took place on July 1 according to local time at a recreation area called 'Jasa', which lacks security measures and is not suitable for swimmers. According to a statement by the Department of Emergency Situations (DÇS), the young people entered the water from a point with impossible conditions despite it being prohibited. This incident has once again demonstrated how dangerous swimming in such unauthorized areas can be, especially when weather conditions are not suitable.

Search and rescue operations were launched immediately upon the news of the incident, carried out with the help of other holidaymakers nearby. The body of the young girl was found by citizens approximately 30 meters from the shore and brought to land. Unfortunately, despite aid being rendered, it was not possible to revive the young girl. Efforts to find the second person were initiated before rescue teams arrived, but immediate results could not be obtained due to conditions. Operational search and rescue teams of the Almaty region Department of Emergency Situations were mobilized to locate the second person, the young man.

Search efforts in the area continued ceaselessly throughout the day and night following the accident. After intensive efforts, the body of the missing young man was found on the shore of the reservoir on the morning of July 2. Initial examinations confirmed that the body had been in the water during the incident with the young girl and that he had lost his life by drowning. With the recovery of the bodies, the families were informed of the sad news and the bodies were handed over to the relevant authorities for necessary legal procedures. Initial details regarding the incident were also reflected to the public via shares on social media platforms.

According to information shared by accounts related to the region, particularly on Instagram, the young people had come to the water's edge to spend a pleasant weekend with their friends. While the group was busy unloading belongings from the vehicle and preparing the campsite, the young couple swam into the reservoir to cool off. However, during this time, the wind suddenly intensified and the water began to ripple. Due to the sudden change in weather conditions and the water becoming dangerous, the young people were swept away by the current, found themselves in a difficult situation, and disappeared from sight after a while.

According to details relayed by sources close to the matter, another eyewitness at the scene jumped into the water to intervene to save the young girl. Despite the attempts, he could not save the girl due to the distance from the shore and the difficult conditions. It was learned that the young girl who drowned was registered in the population of Astana, and the young man was registered in the city of Taraz. Following the incident, officials once again warned citizens not to swim in unsafe areas. The Department of Emergency Situations emphasized that swimming should only be done at beaches where lifeguards are on duty and security measures are fully in place.
