Defense Requested from 18 Businesses Due to Water Price Increase in Kastamonu

Kastamonu Ticaret İl Müdürlüğü teams conducted comprehensive inspections across the province to maintain market order and prevent exorbitant price formations. These inspections, carried out between 6-10 Temmuz, are part of routine activities aimed at preventing consumer grievances. Authorities stated that they closely monitor price increases, especially in essential goods, and evaluate complaints. Such economic inspections, which directly affect the welfare of citizens, are of great importance for the transparency of commercial life in the region. As a result of these inspections, irregularities were detected in various businesses, paving the way for necessary administrative sanctions.

As part of the extensive reviews conducted, a total of 93 different firms were inspected in detail. Among the inspected businesses were 32 supermarkets, 27 cafes and restaurants, and 34 other commercial enterprises, while public living areas such as the wholesale market and bus terminal were also thoroughly examined. Teams inspected 12 thousand 876 products in supermarkets, while this number reached 1 thousand 327 in cafes and restaurants. In other businesses, the wholesale market, and the bus terminal, the control of 4 thousand 352 products and services was ensured, bringing the total number of inspections to 18 thousand 555. These figures clearly demonstrate the great care with which commercial transactions in the region are put under the microscope.

Following thousands of inspections and meticulous reviews, it was reported that clear violations were detected in 9 different products. Upon the detection of these violations, it was decided to directly impose administrative fines on non-compliant businesses. Acting in accordance with the current regulations and legislation of the Ticaret Bakanlığı, inspectors maintain their decisive stance towards protecting consumer rights. Businesses were warned to remove the violating products from the shelves or bring them up to standard. This situation clearly demonstrates how resolute the legal authorities are when market rules are not followed. Meanwhile, a special investigation was launched due to recent claims regarding the water price increase. In this context, official defense statements were requested from 18 markets to investigate whether the increase in water prices was justified. After examining the written statements and defenses received from the relevant businesses, detailed files will be prepared. Authorities stated that these comprehensive files will be sent to the Haksız Fiyat Değerlendirme Kurulu, the final decision-making authority on the matter. If the board concludes that the price increase is unjust and exorbitant, it may impose additional sanctions on the businesses in question.

Extraordinary price increases in an essential and indispensable consumer good like water can be associated with various macroeconomic factors such as inflationary pressures and supply-demand imbalances.
