Kenya Government Launches Clean Energy Program in Ol Kalou Ahead of Critical By-Elections

The Kenya government has expanded its pioneering 'Gas Yetu' (Our Gas) Clean Cooking Program, aimed at facilitating access to clean energy for low-income households, to the Ol Kalou area of Nyandarua County. Approximately 20,000 households in the region will benefit from subsidized liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) starter kits. These installation kits consist of a gas-filled cylinder, a burner, and a grill. This step eliminates the high initial costs families face when transitioning from traditional fuels, enabling them to immediately access clean cooking facilities. This significant launch coincides with a period when the region is preparing for a closely watched and politically critical parliamentary by-election.

The program was officially launched with the participation of the Petroleum Principal Secretary Kello Harsama and numerous senior government officials. The delegation, which included President's Senior Economic Advisor Moses Kuria, Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira, and Blue Economy and Fisheries Principal Secretary Betsy Njagi, highlighted the great importance the government attaches to this clean energy initiative. Following Nyandarua, Nairobi, Kajiado, Machakos, and Kitui, it became the fifth county to benefit from this comprehensive program. Relevant officials emphasize that the program is planned to gradually expand nationwide, aiming to remove obstacles to accessible cooking fuel.

In this regard, government officials state that the implementation in question will not only improve public health but also significantly reduce households' fuel expenses. Abandoning traditional methods such as wood and charcoal will reduce the risk of respiratory diseases by preventing exposure to harmful indoor smoke. Furthermore, this transition will seriously help slow down deforestation and protect regional forests. Officials note that Kenya's international commitments regarding clean energy use and the fight against climate change will thus be fulfilled more strongly.

On the other hand, the timing of this social project during such a critical period is being heavily debated in the country's political agenda. A fierce competition is expected between the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition and opposition parties in the upcoming by-elections. Such development projects and state support during election periods are naturally being closely scrutinized by rival parties to determine whether they influence voters' decisions and opinions. Political critics point out that such investments can be a determining factor for the government's popularity and the candidates' image among the public.

Despite this, government representatives argue that the benefiting regions are part of a predetermined national rollout plan independent of the election calendar or political concerns. For the people of Ol Kalou, however, practical and everyday life benefits come to the forefront much more than these behind-the-scenes political calculations. Families who have suffered from the burden of collecting expensive and laborious fuel for years will now be freed from this situation, experiencing significant financial relief. Spending less time and effort, families will experience the improved quality of life brought by living in smoke-free and healthy kitchen environments.
