Marquez Demands Changes to Assen Gravel Traps Following Horrific Crashes in MotoGP Holland GP

MotoGP Holland hosted one of the most exciting races of the season this year, but this was overshadowed by high-speed and terrifying crashes. Factory Ducati rider Marc Marquez stated that the wet gravel trap areas at Assen pose a serious safety hazard. The Spanish rider, who had a minor crash in Friday's practice (FP1) at turn 16, emphasized that urgent action must be taken regarding track layout. According to Marquez, when riders enter the gravel at high speed, they fly in the air and lose control, carrying a risk of severe injury. For this reason, it has become essential for race management and the safety commission to evaluate the issue seriously.

The consensus grew rapidly following the severe crashes experienced by riders such as Fermin Aldeguer and Marco Bezzecchi. Fermin Aldeguer, despite having what looked like a normal crash in Friday's practice session at turn 11, was thrown repeatedly in the gravel trap, suffered a spinal fracture, and was announced to be sidelined from racing for the rest of the summer. This situation highlighted the danger posed by gravel in high-speed crashes. Other riders, such as Maverick Vinales, stated that although Aldeguer's crash started relatively slowly, the entry speed into the gravel and its nature paralyzed the outcome of the crash. Tech3 rider Vinales noted he was surprised that his Spanish compatriot was severely injured in this crash and that the bouncing effect of the gravel traps on riders needs to be questioned.

On race day, the high-speed crash experienced by former championship leader Marco Bezzecchi further increased safety concerns. Bezzecchi lost his front wheel at turn 15 while chasing Marquez for third place and began tumbling through the gravel trap at high speed. After bouncing into the air multiple times over the rutted gravel stones, the Italian rider miraculously came to a stop without hitting the track wall. Initially taken to the hospital and undergoing detailed examinations, the Aprilia Racing rider was discharged without sustaining any physical damage. Bezzecchi's teammate and new championship leader Jorge Martin also stated that this corner is very dangerous, expressing the need for a wider run-off area or alternative surfaces.

The source of the problem stems entirely from the nature of the gravel and the riders' speed when exiting the track. Names like Luca Marini argued that in sections such as turn 15, the wall's position is very close, and the run-off area remains insufficient for the high cornering speeds of modern MotoGP motorcycles. Marini and Marquez's suggestions were in the direction of removing the gravel traps and instead using dry grass or asphalt traps, as seen in Jorge Martin's crash at turn 12. Martin stated that in his own crash, there was grass instead of gravel, allowing him to stop safely without tumbling; however, he noted that if there had been gravel, he could have flipped backward and suffered much worse injuries.

Despite Assen being a historic and beloved track among riders, safety needs have to be questioned anew with modern motorcycle technology. The Riders' Union and the Safety Commission promised to meet to redesign the run-off areas at critical points, especially turns 7 and 15. Marc Marquez clearly stated that the Assen management cannot ignore this issue and that physical changes to the track must be made for the next season. The Spanish champion, who had made similar warnings in previous years, argues that the solution is not just to add gravel, but to widen the area and fill it with materials that have different grip characteristics. These discussions will likely be the main agenda item at the meeting before the summer break and will lead to the establishment of new standards for rider safety.
