Narcotics Operation in Mersin: Cannabis in Chicken Coop, Gun in Safe

The extensive narcotics operation carried out in the Anamur, Bozyazı, and Aydıncık districts of Mersin has revealed a comprehensive struggle against drug trafficking and use in the region. Coordinated by the Anamur Chief Public Prosecutor's Office and conducted in collaboration with the Provincial Police Department and Provincial Gendarmerie Command teams, the operation was planned following long-term technical and physical surveillance. Simultaneous raids targeting 31 different addresses at dawn were carried out against suspects identified as using or trading drugs. The coordinated action of security forces in the field played a critical role in achieving the operation's objectives and neutralizing the suspects.

The discoveries made by the teams during address searches, in addition to the sought substances, revealed the gravity of the situation. In detailed searches of the houses where the suspects resided, ready-to-use marijuana substances, cannabis seeds ready for cultivation, and synthetic drug types were seized. Examinations determined that the suspects were not only using drugs but also engaged in production activities. In particular, the determination that cannabis plants had just sprouted proved that production activities were ongoing in the home environment.

One of the most striking aspects of the operation was the discovery of prohibited weapons alongside the drugs. During searches at the addresses, an unlicensed handgun, a magazine, and numerous bullets were seized by security forces. The fact that the unlicensed handgun was stored in a steel safe belonging to a suspect showed that the criminals were prepared and that the incident was not limited to drug use. Furthermore, it was revealed that cannabis plants were hidden and grown inside a poultry coop, showing that suspects used different methods to conceal production.

Within the scope of the operation, a total of 26 suspects were detained and necessary legal proceedings were initiated against them. It was reported that the majority of the apprehended suspects were processed for the offense of "drug use." While the procedures of the suspects at the police station were being completed, it was stated that work continued to apprehend other individuals involved in the incident and to decipher the criminal organization. Following the operation, it was emphasized that the presence of security forces continued in the region and that similar operations would continue to ensure public tranquility.

The Anamur Chief Public Prosecutor's Office continues the investigation at full speed, noting that the seized materials will definitely be examined and added to the file as evidence. Authorities stated that the operation aims to protect public health and create social awareness against the scourge of drugs. The joint action of both police and gendarmerie units conveys the message that the fight against criminal activities in the regions will not be limited to a single operation but will continue continuously and decisively. Such operations are expected to increase and continue in the coming period.
