Mexico City Government Continues the Construction of 9 Thousand Housing Units

The Government of Mexico City (CDMX) has launched a large-scale social housing project to find a solution to the housing problem across the capital. In a statement made by Inti Muñoz Santini, an official from the Secretaría de Vivienda, it was noted that the construction of 9 thousand new housing units is currently underway simultaneously in the capital. This massive construction initiative aims to provide needy families in the city with affordable and modern homes. Officials stated that the ongoing constructions are progressing in line with the planned schedule and that they will make thousands of people homeowners in a short period. These projects are of great importance in order to regulate the city's unplanned urbanization and improve living standards.

The delivery of the new housing units is being carried out with ceremonies held in different parts of the city. In this context, most recently at a ceremony held in the Santa Isabel Tola neighborhood of the Gustavo A. Madero borough, keys to new apartments were handed over to local residents. Government officials announced that as of 10 July, the number of homes delivered in 2026 alone has reached the 2 thousand mark. This figure is considered a significant indicator that the targets set for the end of the year can be achieved. It is planned that the activities will continue without slowing down in the remaining five-month period and that 30 thousand housing actions (new construction and improvement) will be completed by the end of the year.

Mexico City Government Head Clara Brugada shared with the public the long-term vision underlying these projects. According to Brugada's statements, the goal is to carry out a total of 200 thousand housing actions during the six-year term of the current local administration, which will end in 2030. While 80 thousand of this ambitious target will consist of newly constructed buildings from scratch, the remaining 120 thousand portion is allocated for the improvement program of existing housing. In other words, the aim is not only to build new buildings but also to bring existing homes with inadequate or outdated infrastructure up to modern standards. This holistic approach envisages increasing the overall quality of the city's real estate and building stock.

The economic resources and investment size allocated for the ongoing mega projects are also highly remarkable. Officials announced that a budget of 9 thousand million Mexican pesos has been allocated for housing projects this year alone, and this amount is expected to continue similarly in the following years. The new housing complex consisting of 106 apartments delivered in Santa Isabel Tola stands out as a concrete reflection of these large investments. The project in question was built on an approximately 1.717 square-meter plot of land, and thanks to vertical architecture, it has enabled the creation of 8 thousand 400 square meters of usable indoor space. This efficient use of land in a densely populated metropolis sets a model for future construction projects.

It is emphasized that the delivered homes are not merely shelters, but modern living spaces equipped with international living standards. Government Head Brugada stated that every new home built flawlessly meets global livability criteria such as security, basic infrastructure services, adequate space utilization, and accessibility. Furthermore, it was highlighted that these homes are offered at highly affordable prices that low- and middle-income citizens can easily purchase. This housing project stands out as part of a comprehensive social state policy aimed at directly increasing the social welfare of citizens and alleviating economic inequalities. As a result, Mexico City is rapidly continuing an urban transformation process that will serve as a model for the metropolises of the future with strong investments and ambitious projects.
