Egyptian Ministry of Social Solidarity Participates in Social Health Protection Workshop

Raft Shefik, Deputy Minister of Social Protection at the Egyptian Ministry of Social Solidarity, participated in a high-level discussion session organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO). This important session was held as part of the closing event of a capacity-building workshop on social health protection. The workshop aimed to provide participants with a comprehensive vision for strengthening and defending social health systems. Shefik was accompanied by directors of support programs, social safety nets, economic empowerment, and human development units, along with the director of the 'Takaful and Karama' cash assistance program. This high-level participation clearly demonstrates the Egyptian state's commitment to social protection policies and people-centered development goals.

Speaking at the meeting, Shefik shared with participants the innovative policies and initiatives implemented by the Ministry of Social Solidarity in the field of social protection. Emphasizing the conditional cash transfer program 'Takaful and Karama', he detailed how this program plays a critical role in the country's social safety net. In his remarks, he highlighted that the health protection coverage for families included in the aforementioned program has been significantly expanded. These expansion efforts aim to support disadvantaged groups not only financially but also in terms of health access. Shefik stated that these steps were taken towards providing the Egyptian people with a healthier life, equal opportunity, and personal dignity.

In line with the vision of transforming Egypt's social assistance system, Shefik emphasized that every family deserves the right to live a dignified and prosperous life. He stated that through the 'Takaful and Karama' program, traditional social assistance in Egypt has been moved beyond being merely a cash transfer tool and transformed into an engine for sustainable development. Thus, it was noted that while families receiving assistance are encouraged to adopt a healthier lifestyle, local communities are also socially empowered. The Deputy Minister expressed that this holistic approach makes the country's future much brighter and holds the potential to reduce socio-economic inequalities.

The system features an innovative infrastructure that aims to seamlessly integrate needy families into the comprehensive health insurance system. Thanks to this integration, the economic barriers facing the poorest and most vulnerable groups in accessing quality healthcare services are being largely removed. Families undergoing regular health screenings, children being vaccinated on time, and maternal health being meticulously monitored are among the fundamental conditions of this program. In addition, continuity in education is targeted by encouraging families to send their children to school. This multidimensional approach proves that the assistance program has evolved from being purely financial support into a long-term and strategic investment directly in human capital.

In the final part of the meeting, officials from the Ministry of Social Solidarity drew attention to the long-term benefits of these social protection strategies, which are also aligned with global development goals. It was noted that every family included in the comprehensive health insurance system and every child continuing their education thanks to this system are considered concrete steps taken toward achieving universal social protection goals. Furthermore, it was emphasized that ensuring every citizen fully benefits from quality healthcare services is essential for strengthening the country's human capital. The officials concluded their remarks by emphasizing that their ultimate goal is to build a fair future where no one is left behind and everyone equally benefits from the social state.
