Revolutionary environmental move in Niğde: Deposit bottles now bring in cash

Within the scope of regulations made to increase environmental awareness and generalize recycling habits across Turkey, the Deposit Management System (DYS) was officially put into effect as of 1 Temmuz. Coordinated by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, this new system ensures that beverage packaging such as glass, plastic, and metal, which are frequently consumed in daily life but harm nature as waste, turns into economic value. Designed to increase citizens' motivation to separate their waste at the source, the application is being put into service at different points in our country, and in Niğde province, the system has been activated in certain markets. This project, which not only provides environmental benefit but also offers an economic reimbursement mechanism, is an important step encouraging individuals to actively participate in the waste management process.

The operating logic of the system is quite simple and user-friendly; when packages bearing the deposit mark are delivered to the return machines placed at designated sales points, the amount determined according to the type of package is reflected directly to the user's account. In this way, resources and material values previously lost by being thrown away are recovered, contributing even slightly to the citizens' budget. With the application initiated in Niğde, citizens in the city center and districts have gained the opportunity to evaluate the empty beverage cans or bottles they collect at their homes with these machines. The inclusion of these packages, which are quite large in number in daily use, into the system both helps prevent visual pollution within the city and increases the recovery rate of raw materials contributing to the national economy.

Although the main objective of the Deposit Management System is to minimize environmental pollution and ensure the continuity of the recycling sector, financially supporting citizens is an integral part of the plan. Thanks to the machines set up in markets in Niğde, citizens are introduced to a model where environmentally friendly behaviors are rewarded, not only by recycling but also by earning money in return for this action. With this application, it is aimed to prevent the uncontrolled release of waste into nature and to bring recyclable waste into the economy. With the spread of the system, it is predicted that both the sense of responsibility towards the environment will increase and the recycling culture will settle in all segments of society.

Within the scope of the application, the machines that started to serve in Niğde are located at easily accessible points where citizens do their shopping. Citizens bring their deposit-bearing packages to these points, taking on the mission of contributing to the protection of nature and obtaining an economic benefit by recovering a part of their investments. Such local applications prove once again how important it is for cities to take an active role for the successful implementation of national-scale environmental policies. Since the recycling of each package means saving energy and reducing the need for raw materials, this development in Niğde has created significant environmental awareness throughout the province.

The transparency and accessibility of the reimbursement mechanism make it easier for users to trust the system and use it actively. While it is planned to expand the scope of the system and put more return machines into operation in the future, the current process is considered a promising starting point for Niğde. This step, taken to support environment-friendly consumption and sustainable development goals, has the quality of a pilot application expected to lead to the creation of similar awareness in other cities. While citizens enjoy the happiness of turning the waste in their hands into a gain, they also play a critical role in leaving a cleaner and more livable world to future generations.
