Rehoboth Beach Biathlon Keeps the Legacy of Lifeguard Dave Reynolds Alive

On Sunday morning, the Rehoboth Beach community joyfully celebrated the annual traditional Dave Reynolds Memorial Biathlon. With the unique scenery of waves crashing on the shoreline, the spectators' cheers and the athletes crossing the finish line turned the region into a literal festival. This special organization was launched to keep alive the memory of a respected lifeguard who served in the Rehoboth Beach Patrol for years. The event has become more than just a sports competition; it has turned into a crucial gathering point that brings together lifeguards, athletes, and families from different generations. For the local community, this annual tradition also holds a very special meaning, reinforcing both the spirit of sports and solidarity.

As part of the event, participants had the chance to sweat it out on a 5-kilometer running course after completing the half-mile ocean swim leg. Athletes could complete this challenging course individually or compete by forming relay teams with their friends. In addition, thanks to the inclusive nature of the event, less competitive activities such as a memorial walk and a mini biathlon specially designed for children were also organized. All funds raised were directed to the Dave Reynolds Memorial Scholarship, worth 4.000 dollars, which will be awarded to a student graduating from a high school in Delaware and enrolling full-time at Delaware State University. Thus, both a sporting event was held and a young student's educational journey was supported.

Dave Reynolds's wife, Jenny Matta, stated that this meaningful event has become a very special way to keep her husband's legacy alive. Having served as a lifeguard within the Rehoboth Beach Patrol for years and worked with great dedication for the region's safety, he left a profound impact on those around him. Jenny Matta expressed that this memorial event brings together not only local lifeguards but also athletes, friends, and entire families from different regions. She emphasized that participants show great interest in this organization not only to compete but also to support the scholarship fund. Matta's words highlighted that the event stands out more for bringing the community together around a common purpose and creating a beautiful memory rather than just the spirit of competition.

The organization is named in memory of former Rehoboth Beach Patrol member Dave Reynolds, who lost his life in a tragic surfing accident in the spring of 2003. Reynolds earned everyone's appreciation for both his determination in beach lifesaving duties and his outstanding achievements in the classroom and on the field. A Caesar Rodney Lisesi graduate, Reynolds reached the all-state level in three different sports, served as captain on every team he played for, and was honored with the all-American distinction in lacrosse. Along with such a brilliant sports career, he also achieved significant success in his academic life, always serving as a source of inspiration to those around him. His passing in the prime of his life went down in history as an irreparable loss for the local community and the sports world.

Following Reynolds's unexpected death, the scholarship established to keep his determination and discipline alive, along with this biathlon organization, has grown steadily over the years. Serving as the head coach of the men's lacrosse team at Wesley College at the time of his death, Reynolds loved leading and guiding young athletes. This annual sporting event serves as an ideal bridge to carry his value for young athletes and his belief in education into the future.
